Has anyone had this fault ? its very rare it does it ,but switch on let it go through the dash checks, press start button and no crank over

Yes i make sure in neutral , side stand up, run switch on ect. ect., try to press button still no crank over.

Switch ignition on and off, put stand up and down, jump up and down in the seat a bit !! and it cranks over

My ideas was perhaps the gear position switch or side stand switch ??
any ideas , maybe i look very silly sat on my bike an jumping round like a cowboy on a bucking wild bull...........yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaa

If the bouncing up and down on the seat makes a difference, and is not just for effect, than I'd be looking at the battery connections, you might have a poor contact that goes away when you put weight on the seat.

Otherwise, side stand switch is the next place to look.

Have you HID's ?
My HID seem to drain a lot just when the engine turns and lamp strikes. dodgy here when cold weather.
Cross check by holding indicator cancel for 5 sec, right indicator 5 sec, then start without headlight.
YYMV.

Had similar recently, turned out to be gear indicator connection behind gear box was unplugger or loose. It did however start in gear with side stand up and clutch in.

Mine is built end of 2005. It does the same as you describe from time to time.
First I thought it was in a way linked to the ABS and thought I may have been pushing it a bit back or forth while sitting on the seat and waiting for the start procedure to complete and by that having initiated data from the ABS sensors that could have disturbed the start.
Therefore I got very careful to not move it while its working concentrated with the start procedure. Anyway, it did not help, it still happens from time to time. Up to now I was not able to find any pattern that would lead me to the reason for that behavior.
Anyway, the good thing is that up to now it always started on the second try.
Therefore I do not worry to too much but would of course appreciate an explanation for why the bike does what it does.

So, does it actually start when your doing your John Wayne or not. If not i'd start with checking the batteries condition - give it a charge and try again.

If it does start then you might want to have a look at the starter reay under the tool tray (yellow on mine) as you may have a loose/corroded connection on that - linky to other thread with pics.

Thanks for the input, bike doesnt have h i ds, battery connections tight and battery fully charged, did it once today same thing, tried side stand up and down, put it in and out of gear still no crank, switch ignition on and off it then cranks over and starts no problem.

could it be the pick up antenna round the key switch ? i see theres lots of posts about it on the site , is my symptoms correct for the antenna ring fault ?

I think if there's a problem with the ring antenna, you should get a message on the display - "EWS" I believe.

At least on my bike its not the ring antenna. The antenna has been changed two times already with no effect on the issue discribed here.
When my bike does not start on the first try there is no error message shown on the display whilst if the known ring antenna issue occurs, one looks at "EWS" in bold letters on the display.

Similar has happened to me once when i switched it on and my grips were still switched on. No crank or any EWS warnings etc. Noticed the grips were switched on, although i dont know if they are powered up directly from the battery or the alternator, switched them off and hey presto! Never happened again but i check my grips before start up.

As St247 said, pull the yellow relay under the seat tray out of its electrical socket and check the relay pins and socket/wiring for verdigris and corrosion.

Also pull the plastic cover off the starter motor and check the terminals for corrosion.

Maybe apply some dielectric grease to the terminals whilst you are at it?

A have removed seat and looked all over for the relay but there is none there the 2008 model must be different
