Tried searching, but it seems most threads that mention the loss of drive don't seem to get the end result posted!!

But from what I have found it sounds like one of two issues. The input shaft splines sheared or the drive shaft Cush drive rubber sheared.

So, how do I go about sussing which? With engine off, in gear I can spin the rear wheel quite freely, but I'm not sure if I'm spinning gears therefore indicating the input splines, or if I'm just turning the diff.
If its the driveshaft I'm guessing ill find shredded rubber inside the gaiter, so is this the first thing to look for? If not how do I see if I'm turning gears in the box, is there anywhere other than the drain plug to see or poke something inside?

Cheers guys:thumb

Take the starter off and you can see the clutch/flywheel

Have you tried removing the gear box fill plug and looking inside to see if you can see movement when you turn the back wheel?

Not sure that would help would it? Surely the flywheel won't be turning whichever part has gone :nenau

No, I guess I can try. :thumb

Put in gear, to give the box more drag and try to turn the back wheel by hand.

As Ian says, watch through the gearbox fill hole - you can see the output shaft turning (or possible not in your case)...

Gaiter removal would be my starting point, the drive shaft will be gooey and burnt

good one

bad one

If you take the starter off, you'll see the frictionplate's hub and the input shat to the gearbox.
If those splines are gone, or the friction plate is broken, you'll see parts moving and others not, when you turn the rearwheel with the box in gear.

When all is well in there, work you're way backwards.

Things I found broken in the driveline over the years;
frictionplate splines to inputshaft.
frictionplate hub rivets sheared.
frictionmaterial loose from plate.
Broken shaft in gearbox.
driveshaft as per the pic above.

Paul.

Not a blanket statement by all means, but often being 'mechanically unsympathetic' with the clutch I reckon

Huge clutch dumps and wheelies generally ........ difficult to wheelie often as they pull to one side due to shaft / gyroscopes etc :blast

Holy cow:eek:, I guess I'm hoping this is the fault, bit easier than splitting the bike and having the box rebuilt!!

Ok guys, thanks for the info, with a bit o luck I may have an hour to get out there later today and have a poke around, waiting for carpet fitter first though:D

Finally got some time today to have a look at my GS. Removed fill plug and turned rear wheel whilst in gear, and the gears visible inside the box turn nicely, so it looks like my worst fears are right, probably the input shaft gone

So parked it up at the back o the garage, pulled my blackbird out, gonna get that back on the road this week, will be taking a reliable Honda to France in a few weeks time. I'll worry about stripping the box out of the GS after France and Scotland in August. It'll be an autumn project by the look of it. Could really do without this, could well spell the end of me and BMW's. far from a happy bunny

Which model 1150 ? How old and what are the miles on it?
I'm not sure what causes failures like the photos, riding style wheelie abuse, mileage or just plain bad luck.
Either way these things happen, sometimes even to Honda's.
Be interesting to see how you go with this fix, and what if anything you conclude the cause to be.
Good luck. :)

Could also be the material fallen off the clutch I have seen that too One day would probably recommission the GS

Feck off! Stop being such a drama queen A days good work "should" see it sorted
The only real possibility of that not happening being an input shaft needed and there's plenty of help on here to sort that too!

How many miles has your panzer carried you about hooning etc Eh??? Perhaps for the price of a couple of chain and sprockets It'll be sorted

Man Up that Man !!! Get a Brew on Get the Overalls on and get to it!!!

Your PAnzer Needs You :aidan

Well firstly I've cured my charging issues, had more trouble with the genny than the regrec. :D

I only have this GS as another bike, my 850 is a far better bike, I only bought this one last autumn off a mate thats had it from new. He never hooned, I'm a harder rider, but don't wheely etc. (so glad I didn't sell the 850 now)

How is an input shaft gonna cost the same as a chain n sproket set, the shaft alone is over £200 from what Ive seen, and even if i strip the box out of the bike myself I'll need to pay someone to rebuild it with a new shaft.

I'm away in two weeks, so yes I could fix it in time, but I'd never trust it like I know I can the Blackbird or my Pan. The last time my Birds charging died I still got home by swapping a battery with a mate, he charged whilst I flattened:rolleyes:

After four years of 850 ownership I was just starting to believe in Panzers again, after the repeated failings of my previous 1100RS and 1150GS. But I guess my 850 is the rare good one. I know you guys don't like it when someone comes on here moaning about Bmw reliability, but I don't think I know anyone that hasn't had major issues or failings with modern models. Failed final drives being very common, servo's we all know about, and the worst i've heard just as I was stuck last friday, my mates K13gt shocks died, £1800 to replace!! Its only just 3-4years old and under 30K on it. And the electrics on newer bikes seem every bit as bad as any Honda Regrec!!

I will sort this out, and I will update, but it won't be till after France at the earliest.
