I've seen so many threads, where a dealer has charged to remove the H&B crash bars to service a GS -

And i've always stated, "that you don't have to remove them " -
so i thought i'd take some pictures today while working on a GS fitted with H&B's -

also changed the alternator belt without removing the bars -

so don't put up with the shite, when they charge you for removing the bars -

Here's the alternator belt cover off, with the crash bars still in place -

Dont work on mine, have to undo at least, but I do know bikes that allow servicing without removal, Step forward Mr Andy Cam.

I'm not just talking about the bike in today - i've never had to remove them from any bike i've worked on ?

Must admit, I couldn't get my rocker covers off, but still managed to adjust the valves with a bit of fiddling.. with the bars in situ.

i can just get the N/S rocker cover off mine without disturbing H & B bars. O/S cover requires centre bolt out of bars & a wedge knocked in between to spread the bars.

even then it's a right fiddle getting the cover out. getting it back in is worse. it has to be inserted behind bars at the exact, perfect angle then twisted in.

in both cases the rubber spark plug grommet has to be placed in the head first. not ideal.

not doubting you at all neil, it was the first time i'd done it. maybe some H & B bars are different??

this before they got bent too.

there is a trick to getting the offside cover on and off - go from underneth :thumb

Hi Steptoe, I can remove both the rocker covers without taking the bars off but I could not get the alternator belt cover off to turn the engine over, would like to know the technique if you don't mind divulging.
Thanks Noel

My dealer says that the bars can remain on..just remove the entire engine... :D
