Firstly use the trip meter more often I tend to be paranoid but then again I've never been stranded by the side of a road either, I average about 50mpg on a 2006 GSA I fill it with £15-20 each time I have too as I'm short and skinny and the bikes a bitch when full and I fill up about 200 miles or so.
Secondly put a spare jerry can in your topbox and run the bike until dry, then try the learning the bike thing to check to see if the RH pumps doing it's job, if the bike sarts up then it's the pump.
If it ISN'T the pump and it still doesn't work then fill it up with the jerry can so your not stranded, I suggest you do that rather then pissing about with the techie stuff first.
I don't know if the fuel strip is in the left or right hand side of the tank but steptoe will tell you when he reads your post. I've got a feeling it's in the RH side.
Let us know how you get on just incase I'm ever stranded then I know what to look for.
Cheers
