Bike stopped suddenly, I had run out of petrol, whilst screen showing range over 200 mikes and petrol gauge showing just under half full. Having filled up gauge now showing full and range up to over 300 . Suggestions please.

As said, use the trip next time. How much fuel did you put in afterwards and is your bike an ADV or standard GS?

Its a GSA and trip meter is sound advice, but what I would like is suggestion as to why the electronics failed to work as they have up till now.

Search on "Faulty fuel strip" & all will (probably) be revealed.

Jet pump not returning fuel to left hand side of tank perhaps?

If it happens again, lean the bike over to the left as far as you dare for a few seconds (probably hear fuel sloshing) then try restarting the engine.

Firstly use the trip meter more often I tend to be paranoid but then again I've never been stranded by the side of a road either, I average about 50mpg on a 2006 GSA I fill it with £15-20 each time I have too as I'm short and skinny and the bikes a bitch when full and I fill up about 200 miles or so.

Secondly put a spare jerry can in your topbox and run the bike until dry, then try the learning the bike thing to check to see if the RH pumps doing it's job, if the bike sarts up then it's the pump.

If it ISN'T the pump and it still doesn't work then fill it up with the jerry can so your not stranded, I suggest you do that rather then pissing about with the techie stuff first.

I don't know if the fuel strip is in the left or right hand side of the tank but steptoe will tell you when he reads your post. I've got a feeling it's in the RH side.

Let us know how you get on just incase I'm ever stranded then I know what to look for.

Cheers

Gauge resets itself every time you fill apparently even when its working properly.
I do know there is plenty of fuel left in the tank when the bike grinds to a stop.
I hold the front brake and tip it up on the side stand.

If I run out of gas (1200RT, and it has happend four times due to a worsening gauge) there's virtually nothing left in the tank. Tip the bike right over as far as you can and it will only take you half a mile at best. No fix from BMW that I know of after all these years :eek

Use the trip milometer

My 08 GS has the same issue. I've had 4 new fuel senders fitted and every one failed.
Mine reads all sorts of daft numbers when at 200mls I know I have about 40mls left but screen showing 120.

On my GSA it's in the LH side of the tank same as the fuel supply pump.
