Well it's official. BMW won't replace my damaged tank panels under warranty. Apparently extensive testing has shown there is no problem with the fastener. If it not fixed correctly then the panel may come loose at a speed of 90mph. No goodwill gesture will be considered after the 600 mile service.
So the fact the panel had not been touched for several thousand miles and 6 months is just an anomaly.

Reminds me of that place in east London called Bow Locks.

If mine pop off post delaer service then I can assure you they will be replaced. :spitfire

I assume BMW are blaming customers for not attatching them properly after DIY tinkering. What has the 600 mile service got to do with anything? :nenau

Mine came loose whilst travelling with a strong sidewind at 65mph or so, following the Dakar rally in Portugal. SLM replaced the plastic panel and the aluminium one which had been damaged under warranty.

Given that others have had the panel replaced under warranty, I would challenge the decision. It's a lousy design.

... Go for the jugular ...

... Accept no compromise, this is a shit piece of design, and the fact that there are so many well documented failures only supports this un-compromising conclusion.

... My local dealer (the revered :bow North Oxford Garage) provided excellent support when one of my panel failed. Unfortunately for the dealers your sale contract is with them not direct with BMW so you must beat the innocent with strong legal language that you can then copy to BuMW

... BuMW did not stick ther heads in the sand over this 'unadvertised feature' of the 12GS ... they shove them up their arses ... Use words like 'inadequate', 'dangerous', 'clearly unsafe', 'unfit for purpose' and 'sale of goods act' :spitfire

... It ought not to be beyond the wit of this group of hooligans to furnish BuMW with a collective response on panel failures so that they either change the forward fixings, or at least stop quibbling warranty repairs for failure (but woe betide them if someone has an off resulting from this shitty piece design). May be the BuMW club could add their tuppence?

... Ask your dealer (or do it yourself) to replace the plastic twisty-stud-shitzen-bitzen for a simple steel nut, washer and bolt :D

That will be the same "extensive testing " department that has also done the extensive testing on the steering clamp bolts I presume, I suspect that department is run by accountants! :spitfire
