Hi Chaps'

I,m just interested if many of you do reasonable mileage on the road with Nobblies?
I have a 2007GSA and run it on Tourances but was interested in your comments on how much the handling would change if I was to fit something like the Continental TKC?

Cheers

Loads of threads on here if you use the search button but in brief, TKC's are a very good tyre on road. You will feel a slight rumble from the tyres and in corners you may feel a liitle movement as the knobbles move under stress. You may also get a bit of weaving at speed.

I like them and ride in the same manner as I would with road tyres. Some may say they aren't very good when it's damp but I've never really noticed much difference. It's a GS not an R1:augie Lot's of people have them and love them!

Your rear will square off quite quickly but you will get 4500/5000 miles from the rear and around 7000 from the front. they are really good if you do a bit of green laning on the GS and give plenty of grip on dirt.

An alternative is Heidenau K60's which are a little harder compound and will last around double the mileage TKC's in my experience. Not quite so good off road as they aren't so aggresive but a very good tyre and my personal choice.

Hi Sgt Bilco,

Many thanks for your feedback, its exactly what I was hoping for :beerjug:

I am due a new set and will now probably go with the TKC's.

Much appreciated!

Cheers

same comment as mr bilco - i have run tkc's for years under all sorts of conditions from 45 degrees to -10C.

The wanders at speed and particularly when loaded up, but you get used to it. They are noisy too but adds to the fun.

I have only had a highside once in the wet and that was because I was being heavy handed out with Petcul and co in northumberland last year. Great in the dry. Touched a pannier down coming back up from the Boxer Beet last year - nice long smooth b road near norwich...aaaah what a castella moment that was, last time i did that was going up alpe d'huez.

Happy TKC'ing!

And they make the bike look cool :D

Exactly the same as Bilco here:thumb2

You will obviously get less miles out of them, but proportionately, they are that much cheaper as well, so the end cost per mile of each type is about the same IYSWIM.

Knobblies rarely need balancing, which is good.
Knobblies will slip easily on wet white lines and ironwork like manhole covers (sorry, person of non descriminate sex covers) and tarmac banding etc, but you very soon get used to that and it can be rather fun, deliberately getting the back loose as you crack it open on a bit of steelwork :D

Also knobblies are lower speed rated......TKCs for example are only rated to 99mph

They won't immediately fall apart at 101 though :blast

They WILL however, start getting cracks around the tread blocks if you do a long autobahn journey two up with luggage at about 110+ cruising speed (including an inevitable 'lets see how fast we cab do two up' moment :augie)

For day to day road use in the UK though, that won't ever cause you a problem and before some berk says it, it doesn't matter that the tyres are rated at a lower speed than the bike will do for insurance purposes...GSs come out of the shop brand new with them on :thumb2

(If a TKC shreds on you at 130 though, it might be a slightly different story :augie)

I run TKCs permanently on my 1150GSA, but would be happy to stick on K60 Scouts as Bilcs says......it's just that the last few times I've put new rubber on, I was about to do some long miles offroad so went for the TKC instead.

TKCs are also easier to fit yourself, as they have softer side walls :thumb2

First ten minutes out on them, you'll hate them.....it'll feel like you're riding on marbles, but after 100 miles the sharp edges buff down a bit and you'll be grinning :clap

They look good , they sound like fun but that is not the principal !
If you care about yourself and the safety off others try to use a decent pair off tires that are suitable for road users :thumb
I do not want to put you off but I did had them ones on my 1150GSA and it wasn't much fun on the highway and stopping in emergency it was a nightmare :)
Also I think that it will invalidate your insurance also if you hit someone and was your fault or not then you may be in the bit off a problem because the tires are not for 100% road use purpose :beerjug:

I think it depends on what surfaces you intend to ride your gs on, I put a set of TKC's on mine as I was going off road and they were very good, however trip over and back on tarmac they drove me insane, they are noisy, they make the bike vibrate( particularly under braking) and they move about when cornering at a pace, all in all I couldn't wait for them to wear down so I could fit some Tourances back on.

However as Micheal points out.

And they make the bike look cool

Utter utter bollox.

BMW list them as OEM fitment, for a start

Try learning to ride rather than just fitting farkles, and you won't have a nightmare on them :comfort

I'm with crasher Miff on this one. If you aint gonna go off road why the feck would you put them on your bike?

To look cool??? :blast

If you know for certain you ain't gonna go off road, why the feck would you be on a GS?

It's the ability to be able to use the bike properly that is important.......Even two up, fully laden, if you see a gravel track that looks like it goes over a hill and you want to see what's over the hill, if you have knobblies, you CAN.

I know you understand the need to look over the next hill Giles, but sadly, many don't. :(

Sure, and yes - that's definitely me. I don't get the looking cool bit though. If you're only ever going to ride on tarmac then stick some PR3's on or the like .. :thumb2

Aye, to a degree.....

Then again, you wouldn't stick pink grip ribbons on a GS either.

'looking cool' for the sake of it is silly, but more silly is buying a bike like a GS and coating it with carbon farkles, crash bobbins and wearing a leather babygrow that you've taken a bastard file to.

Plenty of people do that :augie (or shades of it)

Anything less than Tourances and you lose 50% (or more) of the purpose and capabilty of a GS......why bother, just get a frigging Versys or something :nenau

I can understand those who've gone to the HP2 SM, but that's the extreme and by being extreme, has gone nicely into a different class altogether, but a GS with carbon twattery, bobbins and so on?
Neither fish nor fowl, and should be shot.

You could always get two wheel sets .. :D
