1994 1100GS - bleedin' brakes

Should I hear fluid movement from the unit under the tank when, having pulled the brake lever, I release the pressure and let the lever out. There is a definite sound of fluid moving through the unit or a passageway inside the unit. I can hear this even after replacing the tank having given up on bleeding the unit.

I just went out to the garage and squeezed the brake lever while listening to the tank, nothing, sounds like you have some air in there.

Hi Stewart H. All your input has been informative and helpful, especially this as I have no idea what this system is supposed to be or sound like. So thanks for that, now I know. Went to my local garage today but was informed that they have nothing to do with bleeding Beemers brakes, suggesting that I get it to a BMW dealer where designated equipment will do the job. What all my phaffing about has done is, I believe, to prove that all components are sound and that it is just the function of bleeding the brakes that is failing. I think I'll have another go this evening then its off to the delers in Bishopbriggs to plead insanity and beg immediate assistance !
Must have brakes for the weekend.

Do you have ABS? If so, you should also bleed the brakes on the nipples under the tank...

Dan.

Just thrown my ABS and servo system away - now have nice feeling brakes that work all the time - sweet.

However, now have a sense that the front suspension is not well! Far too much dive, too fast - on with the next replacement then..

different system on the older bikes to the ones with servo brakes!

as said, have you bled the Abs unit, from the bleeding points on top of the Abs

Sorted

Thanks for all the input but the noise I was hearing was normal - just going nuts with all the problems and having read so much about other folks brake issues ! Brake are really solid now, just don't have the ABS working but who cares. Bike goes and stops when required, what else would you want !!! Off on the hols now up the west coast - excellent.
