My cousin in the US has had a new alternator belt fitted onto his 05 1200.

He reckons there is a humming and a vibration coming from it and his dealer reckons it`s because it`s a new belt and as it`s new, it`s a little tight but will soon sort itself out.

As the next trip for this bike will be Alaska with me on my 1100 :D, he wants to double check all is well.

I don`t really want to have to fix a fecked alternator on the Demster Hwy:blast

Any thoughts?

Has it been fitted properly or is it wearing through the front cover?

Has the correct belt been fitted (believe the GSA is different) ?

Sounds daft but is the alternator tight?

I don`t know, the bike in San Francisco:augie

The belt was fitted at the local dealer so I`ll get James to run it back in there to get it double checked:thumb

Unlike the 1150 and most cars, there is NO means of adjusting the tension on the 1200. The belt is designed to be a bit elastic and hence remains tight over it's lifetime but it will feel quite tight until it's worn in a bit. It's stretched over the pulleys when fitted and provided it's properly aligned (so it's not overlapping the edge of the pulley) that's it.

I've got a feeling I've read a thread suggesting that there are 2 different lengths of belt on the 1200, but I may be wrong. The length of the belt is marked on the outside edge.

If it's making a noise I'd check it was properly fitted over the pulleys first.
