Have an 04 1200gs, 19k miles. have noticed over the past few months that when in neutral and i let the clutch lever out, it really rattles/is noisy.

today, at low speeds and with my earplugs in, i was in 2nd gear, shut the throttle to use engine braking, and it sounded like a grating sound. this was true for 1st and 2nd gears...didnt bother trying in any other gears as i could hardly hear it for the wind noise and popping on the overrun.

pulled over, out earplugs, and had a listen. the noise of the gearbox when in neutral is much much louder now. was round at pukmeisters at the time, listened to his, and there was hardly any difference when clutch pulled in and let out on his bike.

with my head beside the gearbox, and bike in neutral, there is a lot of noise that wasnt there this morning...

we both agreed that it sounded awful...i rode it anyway as i had no choice...

so, has anyone had anything similar, and what was the outcome... am gonna take it to bahnstormer in the morning...nice gentle pace up there i think...bike is also out of used bike warranty by just over a month...

we think it may be bearings...not sure...but either way, any ideas on cost of gearbox out for investigation...dont know why i'm asking this....maybe hoping for the opposite answer that i know its gonna be :blast

Oh dear.

I had that a couple of years ago on an 1100.

A kind of grating gravelly sound on tickover that went when you pulled the clutch lever in.

A sound you could eventually hear while riding in town, even over a Remus pipe.

A sound that eventually went SKREEEEEE followed by clouds of grey smoke and loss of forward traction.

A sound that was failure and eventual seizure then collapse of the gearbox output bearing...which actually exploded and jammed my clutch pushrod which burnt out the clutch

Get it fixed ASAP :thumb2

cheers for that tarka...thats exactly what it sounds like...it has 40 more miles to do to get up to bahnstormer, and i'm afraid i'll be getting a pillion back with the pukmeister...

yeah, gravelly sound at slow speeds when engine braking....and thats over the remus and performance headers....and sounds like a bag of nuts on tickover though...not yet the awful sound when engine braking...

checked the oil level yesterday...that was sweet, and oil looked fairly clean. rear wheel spun easily and you could hear the sloshing of gearbox oil as the gearbox turned over.

as pukmeister was saying, it only needs to start to go and it'll produce that awful sound when cranking over at speed.

i think its credit card and then a balance transfer...am away for 11 months of next year, so bike was gonna be layed up from xmas this year till jan 09...but if i cant get some sort of good will gesture from bm towards cost, then i'll have no option but to lay it from now as i is skint :( and dont have a garage to take the thing apart myself.

just back from bahnstormer...that'll be a new gearbox then  ...lots of metallic debris in the gearbox oil, woops

and its gonna be a good will gesture from bm as well...just gotta pay the labour...£260+vat which is better than a new gearbox at £1300...

pick it up tomorrow...now thats a result :)

Result mate :thumb2

You can afford to buy me several ciders then..... :D :D :beerjug:

Yeah, and I'll have a pint of Irish Champagne too thanks Chris (Magners:beer::D).

Gotta say a big thanks to Jody at Bahnstormer for sorting you out with BMW today mate, he's a top bloke. :thumb2

And to all those that moan about paying ten grand for a BMW, try getting any other marque to provide you with a free gearbox when outside of warranty and see how far you get, FSH or otherwise.

I think a free kite surfing demo and lesson for the lad should be in order as payback !!! :thumb

the first thing my missus said was take jody a bottle of bubbly...and i will.... and just a thing from me...i only ever bring problems to this forum...not many solutions....and my main reason for this that the pukmeister, despite the same apprenticeship, training etc etc is by far the better engineer...so i always leave it to him to provide the solutions....

nonetheless, i love this forum, i love my bike, thank god my missus rides as well and was prepared to fork out all the cash to see me ride for the very few days i have shore based this year....

picked up the bike this avo....new gearbox....the bike was so never like it is now....its sooooo smooth...thank you bahnstormer and bm....

its better than new....run in, and new gearbox...sweet as

I'm being nosey here....
How far out of warranty is the bike and do you have a FBMWSH for it?.
BWM replacing a complete gearbox on an 04 bike seems suprisingly generous to me.
