Please can anyone advise what the problem may be.

I have a 95 GS PD and when you start it the left cylinder sounds tinny and rattly - when revved on tickover and moving in 1st and second gears particularly. It always sits on the centre stand and doesn't seem to disappear even when hot. The noise is coming from the cylinder area but could be echoing in the exhaust area. I don't use the bike in poor weather so it does sit idle for a while.

Help !

Cam chain rattle is very common. The noise echoes round the crank case and is difficult to pin down. The other likely causes could be end float in the rocker arms or just badly balanced carbs.

You may laugh at this one but mine did the same. On the centre stand or parked, horrible rattle at low revs. Turned out to be side stand was rubbing against silencer down pipe. Fixed by fitting new side stand bump stop..

Had the same thing on my R100cs, bloody bumpstops

Took months to find

The exhaust nuts appear to all be ok and I have checked the stand bump stop but no joy - I will take the rocker cover off for a more detailed look and I think the valve clearances or carb balance will be next - any other ideas always appreciated
cheers guys

Took the rocker cover off and checked the valve clearances. Listened for clutch, gearbox, bottom end and top end noise. All seemed fine. Checked nuts and they also seemed fine. Took off rear silencer and there was a modified bit of a bean can in the sleeve where a cardboard gasket is meant to be. Apparently GS's can make this noise when the cardboard gasket is either missing or damaged - new one on order. Keep you posted.

The rattly noise had completely disappeared when we had the rear silencer off and put to one side so we had high hopes for the new shim/gasket curing it.

Received the cardboard shim/gasket (it's tinplate actually) fitted it and guess what......................it's just the same...arrrrrrrrgggggggg - the noise returns again as the bike begins to warm up.

So where from here? Carb balance, a valve seat letting fuel past, loose metalwork in the rear silencer ....??

I think you've just answered your own question..

Loose Baffles in Silencer, remove and give it a shake and that should confirm it :)

Maybe try turning the silencer upside ( best to take it off the bike first :P ) ...do you hear a flap fall down in the silencer ? Baffles don't always work free but sometimes 'hinge' inside. Worth a try :)

I found that my silencer was under tension when tightened - it eventually split the rubber bush at the rear and then vibrated a lot.

I spent a while shimming the brackets until it was tight but un-stressed. Its much better now.

If yours is similar, there may be something inside that starts vibrating when the silencer is bolted up.

Bob.

The top silencer mount fits behind the frame bracket. DAMHIK. This is a right pain the the ass if you don't do it correctly. Best done by taking of the silencer mount - lots of penetrating oil, and copper grease on reassembly with the replacement bolts.
Done this way, it doesn't strain the rubber mount.

Bike was surprisingly quiet without the end can fitted. Unfortunately I don't have another to try in its place though.

Thanks John - Maybe but would look unsightly - think my next step is to check valve clearance on other side then take mid section out and shake for rattles .
