Noisy left hand pot when warm

I've just got the bike I've wanted for a while; R100GS
But it needs a lot more work than stated
Left hand cylinder is very noisy once warmed. More than just tappets, which would have been noisier when cold.
Before I strip off the head, any suggestions?
It's hard to describe, tappets on steroids possibly.

End float in your rocker arms is the first thing to check.
