So, did a no cost servoectomy thanks to advice on this very forum. New Goodrich hoses and great brakes. Next is, this engine is very noisy. Really is like a bag of spanners being shaken so what are the common noise makers?
No knocking and banging, just lots of rattling. Clearances and end float all seem ok, performance is normal, no undue vibration, balance is good just seems to be too rattly. Cam followers? Can i get the valve gear carrier of without replacing the head gasket? seems most of the nuts and bolts come off to remove the carrier. Just want to have a look to make sure cams etc are ok. Any way to know which LH tensioner is fitted? Just take it out and look? Wheres my local expert who can have a listen and nod sagely at me? Anyway i await your good advice. :nenau

Know this cos I just did it and made a heap of difference... old/original tensioner has 17mm spanner head, new replacement one is 15mm spanner.

I believe I've read somewhere posted by Steptoe (I think...) that it's safe to remove all the cam gear stuff without replacing head gasket as it usually takes a bash or two to loosen the head once all nuts/bolts are out. So if you don't give it a clattering you should be OK... no doubt there will be more on this ;)

I improved mine by:

New LH Cam tensioner,
Changed to 20w 50 mineral oil,
Balanced TBs,
valve clearances.

Had my car mechanic inspect with stethoscope and he thinks it sounds ok. Me I am not so sure but this is my first Boxer. It runs well so I just use it now and service at the proper intervals.
