I’ve replaced the battery on my 2002 (no ABS) R1150gs. Since then the fuel pump has been running really loudly. I could easily hear it coming home last night at 130kmh. Because of the noise I lifted the tank again to check that nothing was jammed/pinched etc. and everything appears to be ok.

Is this a sign that the pump is about to pack up? It’s the first time this has happened since I bought the bike 4 years ago with 18 000 km on the clock (38 000 now). All the fuel lines were replaced last year after fuel began leaking intermittently from an unidentifiable source.

I don’t have any other ideas as to what could be causing the pump to run at full pelt. I presume that disturbing the sludge at the bottom of the tank could be a factor. I’m hoping to be doing a trip to England and Scotland in July and August (tbc after the weekend) and obviously I’d prefer to sort it out before I set off so any suggestions wouuld be very welcome :)

Could that be a problem with the fuel pressure regulator, not telling the fuel pump to stop ?

I would check the rubber 'U' pipe between the pump and the filter inside the tank- if that's starting to rot, which they do, and it's not sealing properly that would cause the pump to work overtime.

I splashed out on a more expensive Quantum fuel pump last year and found the pump being extremely noisy. The new one…mind you.
So they replaced it with a brandnew one FOC and it’s a s quiet as can be…never hear it with the engine running.
Slight more expensive but they say lifetime guarantee…
No name ones are available for £25-35.-,
Just make sure it’s got the screw on connectors not a plug connection as lots of new ones have…
Check the U bend, clear the pre filter and put in a new fuel filter,
You can run the pump dry briefly and check how noisy I is…
