My dad has a 2001 petrol Mondeo. He recently put some diesel in it, about £15 I think, realised what he had done, then filled the rest with petrol. He has probably put in about 2 - 3 tanks of petrol since then but the car has now gone into a Ford dealers and they have told him the engine is knackered.

I believe compression is poor on two cylinders but I'm not sure of any other details. The engine is a 50k mile Zetec unit.

Coincidence or not?

I'd have thought that diesel, being oily, would not have damaged the bores.

Someone put petrol in my diesel car (twice) with no ill effects after draining etc.

Hmmm... diesel in a petrol is usually not so disastrous as t'other way round. The only damaging thing I can think of is that the engine may have been pinking like a good'un whilst the contaminated fuel was used up. This could have caused all manner of bits of engine damage, including burnt valves and excess bore wear. I do think it's a tad unlikely, however.

Common mistake,
Diesel ain't Oily no more
Remember when you got a drop on your fingers and it was there for days
Now its gone in 30 seconds, no oil in it
thats why on older diesels I recommend 1liter of cheapest {cos it's total loss so no need for posh stuff Aldis £3.50-5 liter is good enough} engine oil in a tank ful 45 to 60 liter tank
Trust me, it will lower emissions, stop diesel clatter and make the engine smoother.
