I'm hoping someone can help.I took the bike out first time in few months yesterday, after a couple of hours bike going great it's a 2010 adv.Stopped for a coffee and when starting bike turned key and no display showing.Got bike home by recovery and I have bike now on centre stand same thing happens on turn key but if you shake bike with handlebars display comes up.Bike starts but revving high when throttle back to idle and exhaust a bit smokey. Thanks Mark.

is it the original Battery ?
If so could be dead / dying . Check the voltage
Check the earth lead as well / battery conections .Has it got enough fuel is it old fuel
good luck

A completely dead bike without a glimmer from the dash lights suggests one of two things..

100 % dead battery OR a broken earth lead. Nothing to do with old fuel as per last post...

Put a single jump lead from your negative battery terminal straight to a good solid earth point on the engine.. does it start then?

If it does then replace the earth lead.. a fiver from halfords. Earth point is on top of the engine, the leads corrode and fail.

If that's no help, put a meter across the battery and check the voltage, If its toast, find out why. Don't just buy a new battery. Is the alternator belt on etc.

Roger.

Sounds like a battery or cable problem.

The high revving is also an indication that the battery has been flat as I have just had the same problem after some maintenance with the battery disconnected. When you get the battery re connected you will need to switch on ignition and the open and close throttle twice. Then when you start the bike it should idle OK. It is called "pre conditioning" I found a reference to it on the internet and it is in the BMW Service CD.

Thanks for the help everyone, got it back on the road.I checked the earth cable and it had a bad connection so tightened everything up and all is well. Thanks for that G5RKO
