So, today i was out for a run on my 1250GS. I hadn't used it for a couple of months, but I have kept the battery charged. I had done about 20 miles and I stopped for fuel. When i tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over it was like the battery was flat. There were various warnings on the dash whilst trying to start. Anyway I left it for about 15 minutes and tried again. Started first time and no warnings on the dash. The bike is definitely charging and the battery is OK.

My current bike only has 2000 miles on the clock and is not yet a year old. I had a similar problem with my last bike just before I traded it in for this one.

So anyone with any ideas? Starter? Decompression system?

I think the first things I’d check would be the battery connections. Had a situation before where the engine wouldn’t turn over and it turned out to be a bad earth from the battery.

First thing I checked. Don't think its battery related. Thanks for the reply

This issue has been largely discussed in many forums, mainly GS forums but also at some RT forums.
The conclusion is battery problem. Sometimes crank stops at the position where the compression is the highest at hot engine. Weak BMW battery has no power to start the bike so you have to wait for engine to cool down to start it.
The only solution is high CCA battery.

I had exactly the same problems as you

The bike was on an Optimate over the winter, started first time, went to refuel about 2 miles away and it would not restart. The bike just clicked and the TFT showed error messages, then 3 dashes then went totally black. Pressed the button a few times more with no success. After about 10 minutes tried for the last time before I called out recovery and it started immediately. Rode home and tried restarting it again 4 or 5 times. Started every time. Tested the battery and it seemed fine. Put the bike back on the Optimate and took out one of my other bikes

The bike was perfect for the next fortnight when it was booked in for a service. Explained what has happened and they changed the battery under warranty. Sold the bike about a year later but never had another problem.

Hope this helps

Thanks all, I'l go back to the dealer and try to get the battery changed.

As above, same with my R1250GS. Kept on the BMW Charger, all signs good when I started it, rode 10 miles, stopped for petrol and wouldn't re-start. Tried disconnect/re-connect of battery but to no avail, wouldn't have it. In the end had to call out BMW Assist who jump started it (and checked all the connections and told good), rode it home and all worked ok. Had battery checked and told a cell was giving inconsistent results - changed battery (put Yuasa YTX14H-BS on instead which is a heavier duty version of the standard battery with 240CCA) and had no issues since.

Just refer then to the numerous posts about the same issues on the internet. That’s what I did after they said no faults logged in memory, tech went off to check and new battery fitted. Good luck.

I see your bike is under a year old, so a new battery should be covered by warranty. When I reported my problem Alan Jefferies at Shipley (now Virtu) informed me that the battery has the same 3 year warranty as the bike.

3 year warranty on the battery with new bike?
I thought it was 12 months!

So did I!

My Yamaha Super Tenere battery was only warranted for 1 year (don't ask me how I found out!). I was very pleasantly surprised when I was told by the service dept at AJ's that the battery had the same warranty as the bike (ie 3 ears) and there was no charge for the replacement.

I've now sold that bike but looking at my records, the bike was first registered on 30/09/19 and the battery was changed free of charge on 21/04/21

Did you check the battery voltage ?
Should be around 13v

They sometimes need more power to turn over when hot/warm as a low milage bike tightens up a bit before it run in.

Im getting mine load tested tomorrow to confirm its knackered

My battery quit this morning after a brisk run down the motorway then started on jump leads. Bike is 2021 so am I likely to get a new free battery? Anyone been refused?
