well what do you know, it just started!
Didn't get round to draining the tank, just gave it another go and it fired up. So i've no idea what it was, but it seems okay now.
possibly the opening the petrol cap tip had something to do with it? Thanks for everyone's advice.
Will give it the pleasure of the service it's overdue for as soon as i get my other bike back from the garage (joy's of having two bikes - both have been broken for the last few weeks!)
