Hi chaps, hoping to be off to normandy at weekend if work permits, does anyone have any good links about the place, things to do and must sees.
last minute thing so not much time to trall the pages,
ill post some pics on my return.
untill then:)

I'm in Normandy at the moment and the weathers been great.
There's loads to see but here's a couple of things you might want to avoid.
Utah Beach, if it's the beach and monuments you want to see fine but the museum is in the middle of being refurbished and is a giant building site.
Pointe Du Hoc: again lots of building work, the Rangers Monument is down as they're driving lots of metal supports down through the cliff to stop it collapsing into the sea.
Really enjoyed Arromanches, the museum, 360 cinema and walking along Gold beach.
My top tip, pick just a couple of things to do or see each day, there's more here than you could hope to see and pick what you really want to do.

If the weather looks ok i would forget all the things to go and see and head inland for saint lo ,And pick up the D999 long fast sweepers ride to the very end turn right and you will find a guest house 1/2 mile on the right run by bob +carol loads of food a few beers get up in the morning and nail it up and down the D999 again .
And if the weather is crap put on wet gear then go and ride the arse out of it before the sleet and snow come
You can allways visit the sites in the winter in the cage:aidan

We went in May for a week in the car (family hol) and there's a lot to see.

My personal favourites were:

- Omaha beach
- Omaha war cemetery
- Canadian war cemetery near Bernieres-sur-Mer
- Pegasus Bridge
- Arromanche (museum + 360 degree cinema)
- Pont-du-Hoc - still worth seeing despite the building work

Falaise , Normande

You'll have plenty to see on the coast in a weekend. Arromanches is a priority I'd say.Very interesting, very moving

But if you fancy heading inland, Falaise ("cliff") might interest you.
- home of william the conquerer, enormous chateau
- location of famous WW2 battle of Falaise Gap
- little known museum full of WW2 vehicles
- nice scenic biking roads in the area around Conde sur Noireau, Pont D'Ouilly

If you're travelling via Le Havre - the Pont de Normandie. Hard to avoid it.

Bonne route

If you go to Pegasus Bridge, which is a must in my opinion!, just up the road is Merville Battery , also well worth a visit, the germans built a big gun enplacement there with the guns able to fire on the brits as they landed on the beaches, they flooded all the land round about to make an attack by the allied forces harder, great museum and Dakota on display.
Also in Ousterham is the Bunker museum which was the germans forward command post looking out over the beaches, another great museum and there is a landing craft on display out front which was renovated by Hollywood for the film Saving Private Ryan.:thumb

Arromanches

Arromanches is an excellent base to tour the area. Stayed at this place a couple of times....

Run by a friendly English couple (he rides too), good parking for bikes in the courtyard, & just a few hundred yards from the centre of Arromanches.
