I am toying with the idea of doing the NC500 and was wondering if any one had any tip or advice about the trip?

It's a nice enough route, and the west side is as good as it gets. But, there are much better roads to spend your time on than the eastern side of the route.

I know, but its the tick the box thing of doing the 500. :clap

Thats why people ride Route 66, to tick it off their bucket list. There's much better roads in the States.

Likewise, there's much better roads in Scotland than riding the NC500. I was heading up there last week to do it anticlockwise,
but turned left at Inverness and headed west and consentrated on that coast and Skye. Fantastic and no regrets.:beerjug:

So if you can put the tick box thing to one side, Scotland has a lot more to offer than completing the NC500. IMHO.:thumb2

We did 300miles of it from the Applecross peninsula two weeks ago, nice roads and some great scenery, it was also heavily policed. I can imagine it also being very busy later in the summer season with tourist traffic. They have promoted the route well over the last year or so.

There are lots of great roads up there, Skye's great if you haven't been?

The cops are out in numbers. Concentrating on the safest bits that can be ridden fast.
Achnashene road and Ulapool road are there favourite's.
Fantastic roads with no dangers other than speed traps.
They are very scenic too, so taking the time to see the views.

Up there a few weeks ago and we based our selves in Ullapool. Fantastic scenery and GS roads so don't worry too much about the whole NC500.

We went up to Durness via Lochinver and then looped back round to Ullapool on a fantastic days riding. Very little traffic and if you get lucky with the weather it's truly stunning.

Zach of this parish is doing it this very weekend so keep a look out for a few pictures and hopefully a trip report.

Indeed it has been well publicised: a non-motorcycling colleague at work told me, him and his missus are going to do it this summer........ in a 6 berth motorhome they are renting....

Do the west side twice, the roads are great, the views stunning.... theres not a lot on the east of the highlands.... even John o Groats isn't the most northerly point....

Got back couple of days ago personally go for it all the west side is so much better but the east is something you need to do if you want to do the whole thing if you just want to ride then i'd go up the east and across to Tongue back the same way towards Ullapool and come inland.Still i'd be more than happy to do the whole thing again good place to stop Craggan Inn near Tongue which ever way you do it.We did it anti clockwise leaving the best till last.

It absolutely fucking pisses me off how much publicity that area is getting and all you southern tossers coming up and riding it. Fuck off back to your own roads.

There's a similar route round the M25 apparently....

:green gri

We would but we haven't got any!!

Such a shame to hear about the police presence - the Highlands used to be great for a proper spirited ride:augie

i was there 2 weeks ago and hardly seen any police presence..nothing, guess we were lucky, fantastic route

Could you define southerner for us please, I don't want to start calling you a jock twat if I class in your opinion as northerner. Ta

Heading home from Arisaig via Skye yesterday and a helpful white van driver flashed me near Achnasheen, on the next long clear straight section of road an unmarked car had pulled 2 sports bikes and I can only assume that they were getting a proper 'seeing to' in the back of the Omega
