Spectator charge mooted for North West 200

The clerk of the course at the North West 200 has warned that the event could "stagnate and die" if its share of public funding is cut

The clerk of the course at the North West 200 has said that he would like to see an entrance fee at the event.

Mervyn White also warned that the gala road races could "stagnate and fall away" if public funding is cut.

He was responding to a BBC report that the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) budget for supporting such events could be cut by 50% next year.

The board believes it could have only £700,000 available for grants, compared to £1.6m for the current year.

Mr White said that organisers of the race, which takes place on the north-coast every May, had been liaising with MLAs about introducing entrance fees for a number of years.

However he warned of difficulties with the proposal.

He said: "It's the whole logistics and planning to ensure residents are not kept from their homes. It's not the easiest managed - hopefully in the future that will come about fairly quickly."

He said that it was currently unclear whether the event's budget would be cut but stressed that it had been a major net contributor to the NI economy.

"This year it brought £5m into the local economy and £8m to the Northern Ireland economy. And for every pound spent there has been a return of something like £33.

"I have no doubt that if it is going to be cut back, the event will have little growth in future years. It probably will stagnate and fall away."

The NITB has said it would like more than its projection of £700,000 but will have to await the outcome of the executive budget negotiations.

I suppose it had to be discussed at some point especially when the UGP has had an admission charge for a few years now.

As said in the article, it may not be easy to implement the charging system, but they may have no choice but to go for it in order to maintain the event as is or to try to develop it further.

Its sad that a charging system is being looked at....That said, if they did bring one in...then a reasonable fee should be considered..ie £8 - £10 per adult and cheaper for children...when you look at other motorsport events...ie MotoGP and WSB they want £60 plus per entry. Western Beach Race this year was £20 per head...I heard people saying they could not afford it....and thats after they have driven to get there.

Perhaps the NW200 needs a bit of re marketing, to bring in other sponsors and for the NW200 Board to discuss options with the Tourist Board regarding funding, against what the NW200 brings in revenue wise into Northern Ireland.

Think its a great idea to charge, as long as they don't rip the arse out of it. Seems a shame that year on year 100k+ folk turn up and a tiny fraction bother to buy a programme. Fair enough they seem pricey but when you can share it with a mate it really is nothing.

Maybe some decent prize money for the riders, and maybe even some big names/teams tempted back too. Or even some money back to help the less well funded riders compete for the week.

Its cheap entertainment whatever way you look at it.

We make a point of goin to the grandstand as its a good way of makin a contribution - where else would u get a day out like it for £20/30 anyway??

I havn't missed a NW200 since 76, I stopped going two years ago because i feel it's got to commercial. I would rather go to the skerries, way better for the spectator "roadracing" at it's best.

Nothing against paying to watch a full days sport, but i mentioned this to someone and their response was that the roads are closed to traffic, not the public, so not easy to enforce someone to pay. Same as UGP I assume.
