north yorkshire moors back roads, scenic route

the jubilee ride out on tuesday was grand, and i guess most people would like to have another ride out,
anyway whilst chatting with some of the lads on tuesdays ride out,it was suggested, we have a ride out around the north yorkshire moors national park,
well coming from that area i know it fairly well, and i was thinking of working a route out, based on taking in some some of the best things too see in the area, and obviously some of the best views available,
a lot of the roads would be small back roads, (lesser known roads), they are not very fast roads, but very good fun,
i could build in a couple of faster road sections to spice things up a little,

(ime not the fastest rider, and new to big gs,s but ille do my best)

i was thinking of getting my maps out and studying them, then doing a reccy of the route on my bike, and tweaking it here and there, then i could put the suggested route on this forum for you to have a look at, then we could work a date out to meet up, and a place to meet up, and a place to part company later in the day, ??

if anyones interested or has any suggestions of somewhere they might like to have a look at then let me know and i will build it in,

thanks, it would be great to meet up again and show you our neck of the woods, (although not much can compare the outstanding beauty of the dales, which would be a hard act to follow)

0900 meet up leave 0930 sunday the 5th august,

the route is 140 miles, half of the route is pretty slow due to the twisty roller coaster of small moorland roads, and villages, though coming back is a fair bit faster on some good twisty
A roads, and wider moorland roads.

well i have had my map out and rode around a route which has a bit of everything, for everyone, (except proper off roading although there are some good byways open to all traffic along this route rudland rigg for example and danby rigg)
the route is around 140 miles it starts and finishes at thirsk,

basicly leave thirsk market place and head for
coxwold
byland abbey
ampleforth college
oswaldkirk
helmsley
carlton
brandsdale (two gates on this road)
gillamoor
farndale
church houses
steep up hill to blakey ridge (faster road but watch out for sheep)
hutton le hole
chimney bank (very steep downhill)
rosedale
pickering
stape (the old roman road now has an exellent surface for a blast across the moors, watch out for the small shallow ford)
egton bridge
grosmont (nostaligic steam railway station and line)
sleights
whitby for fish and chips and a cup of tea
sandsend wonderfull coastal views and sea cliffs
mickleby
scaling dam
lingdale
commondale
kildale
battersby
clay bank car park for a photo with a wonderfull back drop,
the yorkshire tt through bilsdale
helmsley
down suttton bank
return thirsk market place. for a final cuppa and to say farewell for now.

if this sounds ok, i would love you to come, some of the roads are a bit narrow so i am taking my panniers off, the route works out about half small back lanes and half faster twistys, ime sure there will be some roads and villages that you may not have been before,
in the next few days i will go round the route again with tink, and get him to say what he thinks of the route, and also let you know how long it takes to do it,

you will be more than welcome, mate, if anyone from futher a field, wanted a longer stay, there are loads of wonderfull camp sites, for tents and caravans, b&bs pubs hotels,

if the weather is good on sunday then we will go and do another recce, and take the camera to get some shots to show everyone who is interested what the route should be like, and to see how long it takes us to get around at a steady pace, i thinks it is 140 miles round trip,
hope it is good on sunday as its pouring down now.......
it might be after dinner for me as i have to work on sunday morning, but hopefully i shouldnt be there long.
