Norton Anti Virus Software.

It looks out for "spyware" ie tracking cookies, some types of hooky processes and some other nasties which don't quite fall into the Virus camp. :thumb

In other words young James, it'll clear away the nasty stuff left over from your visits to all those naked lady sites........on your PC anyway, you'll have to use a mop for the rest ;)

I down loaded Singing In The Rain of Limwire the other day for my Mum :angel

Wasn't quite the version she was after :eek

Should have specified audio only :mmmm

AVG rules

I've used AVG free since 1999, after Norton let a Virus through that Fecked me 'pooter.
AVG has never been beaten yet, and all my Friends use it now.
Why throw money away on Norton McAfee crap.
Apparently AVG pro is the Mutts nutts if you want to buy one for work 'pooter.
Updates and Runs DAILY same as free one:thumb

you should really remove norton before installing AVG. in fact, i'm surprised AVG would install with an active AV prog already installed.

2 AV programs on one PC is not to be recommended.

Cookie.
AVG is smart, it just isolates the old Norton McAfee, similar way to putting it in a virus Vault, I only found out when reformatting a H/D from 1999 that AVG had left N/Mc on there but cut all ties to it :thumb

Norton gone , i hope :)

Loaded AGV , Zone Alarm , Windows Defender and Lavasoft , 526 bugs quarantened by Lavasoft  11 by AGV :eek and Windows said everything was fine . Zone Alarm working and has asked for permition to connect to internet , icon has appeared in the bottom tray :thumb

I owe some one a beer :beerjug:

Did everything go according to plan removing Norton then James?

I 100% dread messing about trying to remove stuff, as it normally goes tits up and I end up loosing a shed load of stuff. :(

Alan,

In case everything does go Blair-shaped then you've got the System Restore function. This allows you to rewind your system configuration (not your data files) back to what it was before it got fecked. :thumb Yesterday, day before yesterday, day before day before yest.. etc etc

At least in theory ......

Is this Limewire? I might be doing it a disservice but I understand that there may be some serious viruses lurking in there. Coincidentally my lad's PC was sh@gged after he'd been downloading stuff from there. Cost me a full system rebuild on that machine. :(

Alan,
I asked the same question last year and got the same replies.
I downloaded AVG and Zone Alarm, found and downloaded the Norton removal programme that was mentioned, then came off-line.
Ran the Norton removal programme, then then Zone Alarm and AVG.
Went back on-line so they coul dal update and have had no problems since...............

I up loaded AGV and Zone Wall then ran them , then read about Norton removal . I used the add and remove option from control panel ( Norton was originaly downloaded from internet ) it took a long time for all parts to be removed but was told it was sucessful .Then Lava Soft and Windows Defender were installed and run . Had to ok conections for internet but everythink seems fine . Firewall visually working and scans are now clear :thumb

Yes mate it is Limewire and i suppose all my bugs have come from downloads but hopefully a regular check with these new prprams should help :thumb

Norton AV now sucessfully removed from both machines. :thumb

AVG and Ad Aware sucessfully added to both machines. :thumb

Ran the AVG software last night, took nearly 45 mins to do a full scan and found a Trojan virius.

Which goes to show how shite NAV is, coz I ran a full system with it before I removed it from the laptop and it did not detect anything. :nenau

After searching around the net, I decided not to add to add the Zone Alarm or Windows Defender, it would seem that in some cases it can cause some corruption with the Windows Firewall....dunno.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise of course :bow

Never the less, many thanks for your help and assistance guys :thumb

i've configured many PCs with AVG + zone alarm without issue. i've also seen a few with ZA & windows firewall active together with no apparent ill effect, but it's probably not to be recommended. i would use ZA & turn the windows firewall off personally.

windows firewall is different to ZA in that it only detects possible threats from outside. ZA does this as well as detecting any trojans which have slipped in unnoticed "phoning home" :)

if you use a router, you are very likely behind a hardware firewall which is more protection than either anyway.
