Norton want £35.00, for another year's anti virus/updates etc. I have had it running on this P.C. for two years, and it has been fine .....no virus' etc.
I have heard that the 2006 update gives all sorts of install, and running hassles.

I want an easy life. Do I pay up and hope for a hassle free year, or do you guys in the know, know better.

I used the free AVG anti virus on another P.C. ages ago, without any problems, but has the virus world become too sofisticated, for a free programme to be effective.

I Would be very grateful for your opinions

Thanks....... :)

get rid of Norton - slows the PC down too much.

get spybot - install and immunize - set the 'teatimer' to always on.
get adaware - same
run c(rap)cleaner
get AVG - set to monitor all files - and update daily

been working for me for 7 years :thumb.

don't bother with zonealarm either - too much trouble - its got too clever for itself.

I had no problems upgrading NAV.

It doesn't seem to slow down my PC any more than any other AV prog that I use.

AdAware isn't exactly repid when doing a full system scan.

I also have AdWAtch.

And I regularly run Windows Defender (beta).

I've never had a virus problem. Cookies/spyware are halted. E-mail is scanned before opening.

Perhaps I've just been lucky.

I too had similar reservations about installing Norton AV 2006 after having read quite a few negative customer reviews on Amazon. In the end I chose to go for it rather than pay a similar amount just to renew my update subscription. As it turned out it's not given me any problems at all and it's not slowed the computer either.

Do a search here on Norton......honestly.......use the advanced search and limit it to the PC help section...in fact, hold on one sec......

Now have a read through and see if you can find many good things said about Norton.

It's sold to people who (and no disrepect meant here) don't know enough about PC's and security to know any better and who go for the big name product.......plus Norton do big money deals with a lot of OEM suppliers to bundle their software with new PC's.

It's bloated, slow, full of problems, it integrates itself so deeply into the OSthatit causes conflicts with other progs and applications, it's a PITA to remove (deliberately so that people don't bother) and it's a bloody rip off, considering that much better products like AVG are free.

Bin it.

I've got exactly the same on mine with the addition of spyware blaster never had a problem, gets my vote, and I also concur with the remark about zonealarm

:nenau How has Zonelarm got too clever????

It does exactly what it says on the can...it's easy to use with a home network (as long as you know how to find out a machine's IP addy) and it's very very effective.

I wouldn't bother with the pro version, but the free one is superb :thumb

If you have a home network via a router then you should not need Zonealrm as you can configure the router to do the work. The hardware solution will be better and will not use any PC resources.

Belt and braces ;)

Interestingly though, I do have the router firewall configured......and 128bit WEP protected etc etc.......yet Z/A still reports the odd incursion attempt....so something's getting through :nenau

upgrade to AVG free :thumb

I've gone off AVG free. A number of problems connecting to their upgrade server and one instance of a virus not being detected. Fortunately I was suspicious about the file and ran Trend Housecall from their website.

Since then, I've been using the free version of Avast. It seems fine apart from delaying the boot up process quite a bit.

i think he is talking about ZA pro which has aquired a lot more bells & whistles lately. i find it works very well but it's not worth what they ask for it. free one is fine.

I use
Hardware Firewall / Router
AVG Free Edition
Microsoft Windows Defender (Beta)
Peer Guardian 2

I can honestly say I do not remember the last time I had any sort of a problem with my PC :)

Good question ?.....and Fanum is dead right when he says that Norton is sold to people who don't know any better....absolutely no offence taken.

Conclusion.......I'm going to get rid of Norton ( I have seen a link on here recently that rids a P.C. of it completely ) then go the AVG route.

I'm running the rest of what Motomartin advised already, plus the free version of zone alarm.

Many many thanks for all the replies. I was at a loss, but now I think I have a fighting chance.

Cheers................. :thumb
