Norway Norway Norway!

Tromsø.

If you want to go to Tromsø in February 2018, then look here:
http://www.tromso2018.no/index.gan?id=343&subid=0 Perhaps you get an Olympic medal! I remember Eddie ''The Eagle'' Edwards! :)

I stole this from a site; it tells us about the sun in Tromsø:
''The Midnight sun is above the northern horizon from about May 18 to July 26, although the mountains in the north block the view to the Midnight sun a few days, meaning that you can optically see the sun from about May 21 to July 21. Due to the position on top of the globe, the twilight is longer, meaning there is no real darkness between late April and mid August.

The sun remains below the horizon from about November 26 to January 15, but due to the mountains the sun is absent from the centre from November 21 to January 21. The return of the sun is an occasion for celebration. Due to the twilight, there is some daylight for a couple of hours even around mid winter, often with beautiful bluish light. The nights shorten quickly, and by February 21 the sun is above the horizon from 07:45 to 16:10, and April 1 from 05:50 to 19:50 (summertime).''

The northenmost brewery in the world are in Tromsø; MACK.
Perhaps you find it at the ferry, called Arctic Beer?
And the strawberries are sweeter up here then south in Europa; because it's not too hot they do not grow too fast, and because of all the sun they get sweet.
And there are no polarbears walking around in Tromsø! Yes, it's far north, but there are not ice on the fjord all the way up to where the polarbears are living!
And there are no pinguins - they live far far south, on the other cold end of our Globe. :)

I just want to tell you...

...there are snow at Beito!
http://www.beitostolen.com/wshow.aspx?a=192
It's a popular area for the ski-people in the winter, at the area Valdresflya in Oppland, between Fagernes and Otta.

Some facts about Norway here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Norway
Note: It's not that wet in Sognefjell and Lom! :thumb
And another place I read Lærdal (Laerdal) are the driest place in Norway - and that is not far from goodies like Sognefjorden and Aurland, Flåm, Gudvangen, Lom, Øvre Årdal, Turtagrø/Fortun and that stuff!

Oscarsborg Fortress, Oslofjord, Drøbak:
http://www.aftenposten.no/english/bildeserier/article1081978.ece?start=15
I guess you have heard what happend 9 April 1940? The guns at Oscarsborg sank the German ship Blucher, and it's still at the bottom of the fjord.

Now there is a hotell at the island!
I have been there, but that was before they opened the hotel.
If you would like to stay in Drøbak (where there are a aquarium too, and a shop open all year selling Christmas decorations & things) you leave your bike in Drøbak and go out to the island with the ferry. Out there you can go on a tour with a guide and se pictures and models of the area, and you can see the guns & thunnels an hear the story.
They are showing it in a way I do not believe Germans feel are bad, but with respect as a part of a history. We are friends now!

There is a ferry from Oslo too, but not for motorbikes.

I would like to go there with you! Tell me when and I'll try to find out everything we need to know; what time, cost, hotell (if you like), ferry, safe parking and so on.

I love the area! And it's not far from my home and Tyrigrava!

:) Liv.

If you believe Sweden and Norway are simular; read what two tourists wrote:
'' Hey Alan,

I'd nearly given up hope......good to hear from you. Hope you all
had a great trip last year......you were right...Sweden was pretty
much on the boring side...Norway was tremendous.

We'll be travelling to Norway again sometime in the next few
years but this year I'm jumping on the Morocco band wagon in
September / October.

take it easy....

Gordo' ''

'' I did the Norway / NordKapp run in mid/late June 2006. Photos are excellent. Recognised a few places that I had been.

The day I arrived at the Arctic Center was decidely chilly but it warmed up a bit for the rest of the holiday and there were only a few days with rain. Almost dropped the bike on a bend on the Trollistigen pass when I met a car swinging wide. Also got rained upon in Alta. NordKapp was shrouded in fog for the last 20 miles and then cleared up for beautiful views of the 1,000ft sea cliffs. I also found campsites quiet but mostly used hytters rather than my tent due to the mosquitos in the far north! ''
(I nicked it from post number 45 and 46 here: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78673&page=3&highlight=norway )

See!
Didn't I tell you over and over again!? :augie ;)

I'm back, but please search in my old posts before you ask me; - I want to go out and play!:)
But if you need help, I'll help! I love to dig out new info for you! :thumb2:beer:

Right now there is no snow in Oslo, but 10km direction north they have a white forest!

Well, after reading all this you know what to do:
Stavanger - Sognefjorden - Lysebotn - Stavanger ( -or Sognefjorden - Aurland - Hol - Geilo - Oslo - ferry Denmark).! :P
Holland? Not one single peak for you there! And you can get tulips from any local store when you get back home. :D

If you like a dead-end-road and gravel hairpins; Hjølmodalen, next to Eidfjord.

:) Liv.

If you are planning to go here for the first time, why not read our news in English?
Aftenposten is a newspaper, a big one, in Oslo, but it tries to cover all of Norway.
Right now the bad weather and avalanche is on top in the news.

Surf it, you might find something useful here too! :thumb2

(The pic is showing two natives, doing what all the natives do every day! :P ...or not. OK, this is when one elk payed a village a visit. Not a good idèa if you are an elk.)

Some useful info here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1273235#post1273235 for:
-Renting a motorbike in Norway = no, forget it.
-Rentinga car in Norway = ok, why not?
-How to find out if the roads in mountain passes is closed because of bad weather, and so on.
-And I try to teach you some useful Norwegian words! :)

In that link I forgot some important words:
Øl = beer.
Mat = food.
Penger = money.
Bensin = pertol.
Vakkert = bautiful!
Våt bukse = wet pants. (It could happend, because of rain or steep hairpins! :D )
Takk = thank you.

About VISA cards:
We natives can do a withdraw (or whatever you call it?) = get money at any petrol station and most shops, if the cashier has some cash. But I think you need to call your VISA-office at home before you go here, to change some data on your card.
But you can get money from our mini banks, also called ''høl-i-veggen'' = it is slang, and it means ''hole-in-the-wall''. :)

And, one more thing:
When you are finished filling up your bike with petrol, you can move it a little so the next thurst vehicle can get som petrol, so move it a little BEFORE you go inside and pay!
If you have an opening helmet, just to open it is ok, but at some patrol stations they does not like you to wear a normal helmet on inside.
If you take your helmet off before filling the bike up, and then move the bike before going inside to pay, I'm sure all would be happy!
Do not move your car before you pay; -at some stations this is ok, some not.

-Do you need more info? Neh, I think that'll do! :beer:

:) Liv.

Possibly not the best Q for you to answer Liv, but open to all that would be so kind....

What is going to be the "best" way to get to Norway from the UK now the Newcastle routes are (all but) closed?

(i.e the best compromise of cost v riding decent roads rather than slogging up the M way)

Cheers.
Adam

Probably ferry to Denmark, then new ferry from Fredrikshavn, DK, to Kristiansand, NO.
