One of the US bike magazines said that they ahd put on extra shifts of workers to try to meet demand.

My dealer says everything is coming through as planned, no delays :D , no speed-ups :(... If I could just get it a bit sooner than planned October (Bike build is in September) *rolling-thumbs*

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, pal. Perhaps this snippet will help:

"Due to the enormous demand, BMW Motorrad has decided to increase the production of the R 1200 GS. "Incoming orders have exceeded all our expectations and we want to reduce delivery times for our customers as fast as possible. The aim is for customers who order now to receive their motorbike in the summer", says Peter Müller, head of sales and marketing of BMW Motorrad. Additional shifts have been arranged in the short term with the work force of the Berlin motorcycle plant. All suppliers are also co-operating. "This shows", says Dieter Schliek, plant director in Berlin, "how very flexible our workforce is and how it is dedicated to satisfying our worldwide customers". Quite a few employees were even willing to put off their annual holiday so that the R 1200 GS could also be assembled during the plant holidays. "

Same as me

Two years ago I got my 1150 quicker than the normal x months wait. I suspect that they build more than they say so that magazines / breakdowns etc get one sooner than the quoted timescale. Which also of course keeps the "ooh no sir, no discount is possible at all" scenario more justifiable. Or am I being a cynic?

Do we know how the production......

Process works at BMW?

I ask there seems to be certain dates for delivery, rather thana constant arrival. Which just makes me wonder if BMW do batch runs of bikes.

Produce a batch of GeeEsses then a batch of R1150's, then a batch of K1200?

Or do they have a constant production of all bikes but it's just their distribution process that allocates bike to different countries at different times so making it look like a batch job??

Purely out of sad interest. I must get out more

I'd best have a word with CW's. I was going to order mine in the next couple of months so I could get it in time for next summer. The really sad thing is that, unlike everyone else, I don't want mine until next summer. Not finished paying for my current bike yet!

AFAIK (and from photos I've seen), they produce as they get the orders. An RT could be in line with a GS, then a 650CS etc.

Thanks for that Emoto - I've seen it before, and I was hoping that if I leave it for a bit and then go down to the dealer and ask they'd say there's a slim chance...

.. but no.. I'm still hoping tho!!

If the production works like NLS says, then it would mean that the bikes come quicker. What I understood is that they've also shifted production from other models to GS', as the GS is much higher in demand. But on the other hand, BMW don't cave to demand - it would lower 2nd hand value...

... I'm getting really good at thumb-twiddling by now... :P :D :D

Glad you're getting your bike sorted tho Dutchman! And, Sorry to hear about your spoilt trip! Hope things will be better.

This is fairly typical for BMW motorcycles in my opinion. Rode to Nordcapp on r1150RT 3 years ago and brake servo failed 300 miles from Bergen on return journey. Rode on without brakes back to Dublin Irl. Following year, hydraulic slave cylinder failed while touring on the Hebrides off Scotland and again nursed the R1150RT home. Bear in mind that the bike had less than 10,000 miles on it and always serviced at or before required intervals. Toured Iceland on a new R1200GS this year and again ABS problems - nearly ended up under the back of jeeps twice when the system failed to stop the bike on dry tarmac roads. Also, gear indicator light went haywire in rain indicating anything but the gear I was in until it dried out. Rust on inside of rear wheel spindle and factory fitted engine bars. While washing and cleaning the bike after the trip I discovered the side-stand has become loose or worn at the pivot/hinge point. I would rate the GS as a good bike for tipping around town and has potential for distance work IF BMW ever get around to building a quality (reliable) version. As it is, workmanship is poor, electrics are poor and finish is deteriorating in front of my eyes. BMW should take the GS to Iceland for testing for a few weeks in the rain and cold to test the quality of finish and reliability of the machines. Oh, and don't get me started on the flimsy top box mounting!!!

Coooool ! Do you have any pictures ? How was it ? Would you recommend it ?

Icelan is spectactular but prone to rain and there is always a constant wind. I had a wonderful trip and spent most of my time travelling on the gravel/dirt roads - about two thirds of the roads are not paved. Scenery is a mix of Norwegian fjords with deserts of Patagonia with the green of Ireland/Scotland all wrapped up and peppered with wind and some rain. Oh, and also the glaciers. I would highly recommend it for any GS rider. I fitted Touratech panniers and a set of Twinduro tyres. Temperatures ranged from 5 degress in western fjords to about 16 degrees approx. Camped mostly. People very friendly and helpful. Will post some photos when I sort them! Looking forward to another trip there. Took 3 ferries and about 4 days to get there and the same back. Got 14 days there.
