My daughter is using my Fiat Panda 4x4 which has a pre engaged starter.
I thought she was pulling my leg but I took it out today and saw for myself.

When you turn the ignition key through ignition to start... nothing happens. The ignition light comes on but the starter wont turn.
If you hold the key in that position for 5 to 15 seconds the starter will turn. I once counted 25 seconds before it started turning ?????

Any ideas?

no whizz

A 4x4 lucky you. Sisley? my Panda did just this today. Prob a bad contact. There is a little wire on the starter with a push on connection, pull it off clean it up and squirt with WD40. There is also a big beefy red power connection bolted on have a look at that also. Disconnect battery if removing this one.:)

Whats happening - due to italian corrosin - is the current is being stopped from reaching the starter.

After a while of holding the fey over the corrosion is burnt through - somewhere in the line - and it all works.

The ignition switch starter contact could be corroded.

If theres a relay - unlikely - it could be that.

or as straypuss says - the starter solenoid wire

or even the main contacts burnt inside the starter as the solenoid clunks in.

if the solenoid clicks its that - happened on my guzzi - probably the same starter or samller on the panda :)

I've got a steering wheel on my knob, that's driving me nuts!

Italian elictrics

Yup my Guzzi burned the contacts on the solenoid. I stripped it and if memory serves turned them over and it was fine. No clunk says sol wire to me If you short the power cable with a screwdriver you can test that the motor runs..etc

It`ll be the knob on your seat thats the problem.

Cheers chaps, I`ll grow arms a foot longer and have a go at that this morning.
