Hi all
As you may have read over the last few days I have been looking for a GS and I am VERY pleased to say I got one this afternoon
It is an 03 R1150GSA in Black with 2 previous owners prior to me. It had a full BMW 24K service last week (inc polly belts) and because the chap selling it had been let down by a non paying ebayer I managed to get a bit of a bargain (I think see below!)
The only slight concern I have is the dreaded noisy gearbox!
I have spent most of the night reading conflicting views on various gearbox noises and would love to get a consensus on whether I should shove some ear plugs in and crack on or stop riding and whip the gearbox out (best and worse case!)
I should add that given what I paid, a replacement gearbox would still make this a good value bike so I do not feel let down.
The symptoms are common (I think):
In neutral on the centre stand with clutch out there is a "whiring gravelly" sound from the gearbox. When I pull the clutch in the sound dissapears. This is repeatable. I seem to remember from my ride home that the noise is not there when in gear under load (i.e driving clutch out)
I guess the question is is this a case of "they all do that, ride on" or "its the output shaft bearing dont ride it another mile"
I appreciate this is a very difficult question to answer without hearing the noise first hand but I would appreciate any advice available.
My intention is to ring the nice Mr Steptoe once the shop is open on Tuesday and ride it down to him for him to diagnose but in the meantime I value all and any input.
Many thanks from one VERY happy GSA owner.
(PS if anyone noticed it on ebay it was the Black GSA in Bristol with 30K, full BMW SH and I paid a fair bit less than the auction ended at (the original bidder was a non payer and I happened to ring at the right time)
