Not stopping!

I think my bike is making up for all the GSs that are not starting, mine will not stop! Or at least removing the key does not kill the ignition. I have to disconnect the battery.

I presume it is one of three things, the key barrel is no longer linked to the switching mechanism, the contacts in the mechanism are stuck closed or I have the tax disk is in the wrong place.

I have done a quick search in here, but have not found anyone complaining of this 'undocumented feature'.

Does anyone know how the key barrel activates the switch? Any thoughts on how likely it is to fail that the bike cannot be started?

The chances of Hursts having any parts I might need on Christmas Eve sounds remote, but I want to get out and about on it over christmas to new year.

I know very little about bikes and the workings of but as a short term fix....I assume you tried the kill switch?

Couple of things to try

Maybe put it in gear and push the sidestand down that should kill the engine as a safety feature, Then try switching off and remove the key, does the dash go out ?

As some one said the Kill switch and again does the Dash go out when you turn the key to off and you remove it ?

I've come across some weird ones a friend of mine in Newry has an 05 1200GS which I can only guess has an internal fault of some sort

Basically if the gear indicator goes out the next time he stops he cannot start it But I discovered if I jumped the solenoid with the sidestand up and in neutral I could get the bike running again so he has a hidden switch for those times when he is stuck

I changed his ECU for mine and everything works properly (when I cover his key with silver paper and held mine beside the antenna ring)

Another friend had everything work okay then he lost the indicators and main beam again it was one of the ECU's

I would suspect but couldn't say what is wrong, without seeing the bike but if the key switches on and off okay without starting the engine ????? I'd suspect an ECU

EDIT Quite possibly the Ignition switch after reading the thread above they must have made them even more feeble than previously to save more weight

I am pretty sure it is the ignition switch. Turning the key on or off, makes no difference. i can stop the engine with kill switch or side stand. I just cannot turn the brute off. The ignition switch is having no effect. Luckily it has failed in the on position. Everything works fine.

The dash, side light and tail lights remain on unless I disconnect the battery.

The switch still has the security bolts fitted, so that means it will be a bit of a bugger to remove the unit. Curses.

Had the same scenario on my 650 twin, where it would still happily run without the key in. At the bottom of the ignition barrel there's a micro switch and it had failed in the "on" position. 30 minute job at the dealers to get it changed. Biggest PITA was having to disconnect the battery after using the kill switch to stop the battery going flat.

OK, I have just disconnected the ignition switch and using a small piece of wire I can now switch the bike on and off. The question I was about to ask here was if the switch can be replaced on its own. There appear to be two little screws holding it on.

From the last reply it looks like that is all that I need to do.

I wonder are Hursts open on Christmas Day afternoon?

At least I can now use the bike without fear of being stranded somewhere. It is warm and sunny here in Co Antrim. I am off out for a quick spin.

Yes and it's an easy job. I changed mine in the US this year and the micro switches just plain wore out. Did the hot wire as well which did the trick until I fitted the switch
