We, (SHMBO and I), are getting around quite a bit recently, going further afield every year We have been trying to find internet cafe's while away, but some places dont have them and some countries use different alphabet which fecks things somewhat

I need some help with regard to notebook computers and connecting to the net while in foreign parts.

Biggest question I have is:-

If you are connecting to the internet via a dongle, say on t mobile, will the computer connect if there is no T mobile signal.
The mobile phone we have tends to connect to any available network when abroad, will the dongle/notebook do the same?

Any help or advice appreciated

It will depend if your mobile provider has a roaming agrement witrh a mobile provider in the country t o which you are traveling, and the level of data access\s that provider has. In the main in europe all of the providers have argrements in just about every country.


I bought a Samsung NC10 3g, which has a built in sim card slot and boradband modem, in addition to normaly bluetooth and wifi etc. it works a treat and nice thing I dont have to have a dongal hanging off the side of the computer.

the good thing about buying one with an unlocked built in broadband modem and sim card slot is that when you get to countries where it is expensive you can just buy a local payg sim card and used that, its a hell of a lot cheaper, and it is not somthing you can do with a dongal which are locked to the provider, next best thing would be an unlocked dongal, but they are expensive, in comparison.

And just for information of anyone interested, the Advent 3G netbook is a rebadged MSI wind.

Mc Donalds restaurants have free WIFI in of the most EU.
www.accorhotel.com have orange prepay system which includes many other places.
lots of hotels let you use there WIFI.

I would agree with that, if traveling abroad then dont go for anything that is locked. You can get some really good deals in the local country which will be a load cheaper than the stupidly high roaming charges.
