Good evening gentlemen, the last time I asked for a bit of help, I got a couple of tossers, intent on taking the piss. This time guys I know you're there, so there's no need for any attention seeking comments. Save it for school on Monday.

Anyway,I was riding the xchallenge on Wednesday evening, did a Uturn, accelerated away, loss power for a moment, all the dash lights came up, I turned it over once on the button, then nothing. No dash lights, no electrics no nothing! It's as if a power cable has broke, but a quick inspection has not revealed anything. It's been suggested that it's a relay, but would a relay kill everything.

Thanks, is this a common problem?

Yes

£50 for a new ignition barrel or case

Can't remember - think it is the casing housing that goes

Common problem

Sounds like ignition wires or a loose connection somewhere up the top

The ignition wires can be re-soldered, take the plastic cover off the back of the ignition and have a look at the connections

or alternatively a rocker switch can be used to replace the key switch

I'm hoping to do a 5k mile trip next year, some of it in wilderness. Would it be better to go down the rocker route or does the repair fix the problem.

Personally I would (I have!)

But a proper repair job would fix the problem, presuming that is the problem!

Where are you planning on going?

As above. Check wires in bottom of ignition switch. Solder breaks loose from the pins. Visual inspection will confirm (2 screws to remove lower part of switch, then prise black plastic cover off).
Can resolder, or order new switch (if resoldering, do them all).
Should be fine for years once done.

Think I'll go for the repair and take a soldering iron with me.
Ghana, but if I post it on the Internet, I would've told the world and I can't wimp out. So I'm keeping it close to my chest for now.

Steering lock

Sorted the ignition problem, thanks again to all. Did also read that the steering lock can give up, if so what has been the fix on that.

Not heard of that. Could remove as precaution and take a chain/lock instead.

I think removal will necessitate removing forks and triple clamps to allow removal through the headstock. Not too bad a job, and good opportunity to grease up the headstock bearings before you go.

Alternatively could just get it ground off should it break on you when it happens.

I haven't had a working steering lock for 4 years on my XC. Will only stop a 6 year old for a few seconds anyway. If you are going to travel, either get the bike out of sight, indoors, or under guard (Kaz/Russia....etc) and always take a good cable lock. Cables seem to be rated higher than chains due to taking a little longer to go through by a determined thief.

btw, my steering lock didn't break, I just repositioned the ignition location and changed switch at the same time. If you plan to keep the same ignition switch setup and are worried about the bike getting stuck locked, just grind off the headstock bracket, then it can't.

If it's not a known problem, I'm happy to leave well alone.

I always carry a small gas powered soldering iron on my trips'n tours .... very handy indeed :thumb

A few pieces of wire, electricians tape, small coil of solder and you're ready for any emergency. Once had total failure at 70mph overtaking a line of cars .... now that was interesting. The main battery lead had fractured right at the terminal ... soon sorted :D
