The quick shifter, which has always functioned perfectly before, has decided to pack up. It is not working on up or down changes. Before the failure, it had been working seamlessly, snicking up and down the gearbox, just as it should do.

For some unknown reason, the shifter is not killing the ignition. This means that the engine is remaining under load, which has the effect of ‘locking’ the gear lever. Gear changes, up and down, using the clutch are quite normal. I can do clutchless gear changes going up the box but I have to close the throttle, taking the load off the engine, just like you can do on most motorbikes without a quick shifter.

A call to BMW Park Lane at Battersea will be following on my return from France.

Many moons ago before Bm started I was installing quickshifters on hexheads and twin cam bikes and I was ridiculed.

Now it’s seems folk can’t live without them.

Strange isn’t it…..

It engaged once this morning, between 3rd and 4th, then naff all up or down thereafter.

Sometimes I can lift the gear lever a little in 4th and the gear position indicator light on the TFT will go out, which tells me the sensor for the light is working sometimes. Then the bike stays in 4th and the 4th gear light comes on again. The gear lever linkage looks OK and the clutched gear changes are still all fine.

Hey-ho, back to BMW it can go.

Mine is playing up intermittently.

when i accelerate from a junction and go up the gears usually 2nd to 3rd it doesn't go in gear.
the result is it kinda gearbox brakes and makes me fly forward into the bars unexpected.

i try again and it changes normally?
It does it probably twice a day and sometimes not at all?

Its due a service in June, dont know if i should leave it until then and ask them to look at it or go sooner.

i will do gear changes like back in the old days till then ;)

I had one sudden engagement, second to third, first thing this morning. It too tried to lob me into the windscreen.

How to reset the Quick Shifter ?

First check if the shift rod is tight at the rose joints and, of course at the shifter. If all is as it should be, then you can try and reset the shifter as follows :

1) Power on,
2) start the bike in 1st
3) While driving go up through all gears being careful to remain 10s in each.
4) Once in sixth, pull in the clutch and shift down to neutral keeping the clutch pulled.
5) Switch off contact and wait 120 sec before restart

The last BMW quickshifter I priced up from BMW was over £1000.

I'd learn to live without it if you're not covered by extended warranty.

The bike is definitely within warranty.

Coming off the train, it managed to shift up from second to third but that was it.

1st world problems
Just use the clutch

Currently I am watching a clip about mine clearing in Ukraine on the news
Interviewing a 65 year old man, who has had his lower leg blown off
He said he had no house now
Burnt down
No cars or farm machinery
Burnt
Now no lower leg
His land is now mined and his grandchildren cannot Play around the garden
He’d love a non operating QS I expect

Sorry for the digression….but it’s a funny old world

I am BMWs will restore it, easier than the Ukrainian man’s life

BMW Park Lane at Battersea are calling me back to book a date to have it fixed.

I guess I’ll just make the appropriate arm signals, if and when the indicators pack up, as that’ll be a first world problem too.
