I have finally got round to pullin the heads off the 1100, following Steptoes guide (fuggin top knotch) and 1 hour, nearside head is off :thumb2
Now then it has just occured to me that when i try to get offside cyl to tdc the zip tied cam sprocket on nearside head is going to want to turn ?
How do you get round this or am i being thick :mmmm

off to the quacks and physio now so checkin on return. cheers

You can't rotate the engine with one head removed (as you say, your cable tied sprocket won't allow it).

The other head will be at TDC (but exhaust rather than compression like your nearside head) and you can just remove it as it is (cable tieing the sprocket as usual). However, due to the cam phasing, the valves on this head will be slightly open (the camshaft keyway will be 180 degrees different compared to the head you've just removed). This won't matter in terms of being able to bolt it back together but you won't be able to put the head down on its gasket face as the valves protrude - you must be careful not to knock them and bend something.

By the way, I notice that you've done what I did and because its a sod to remove, you've just loosened the left hand cam tensioner rather than removing it - be very careful - apparently the tensioner piston can fall out and end up falling down the camchain tunnel into the sump (or so the factory manual says anyway - perhaps others can comment?).

My piston and valves looked pretty similar to yours - I didn't bother cleaning anything up (although I did end up getting the head skimmed).

I only discovered about the tensioner on my second attempt on the head when I took a look at the factory manual rather than just using Stepper's notes and the Clymer I used first time round.

Good luck with it :thumb2

Sussed what you mean now,on the nearside the tensioner is on the top and me being a robot instead of thinking, took out the bolt underneath which holds the bottom part of the cam chain runner. Now this worked out ok but have wound tensioner out on the offside. both heads off to works for stud removal. so far so good
