I back up 'stuff' to an external hard drive for safety, there are a whole bunch of folders with numerical idents that comprise about 50 gig of drive space and I've no idea what they are. Here's a couple of examples,0218 11-52-29F and 180209 13-26-41F. Anyone any idea what they are? Tried googling one but no joy.

Backup Software

Its probably the way your back up program refers to them - What do you use ?

I use Macafee back up and restore. All the other 'stuff' just has it's file name as the original. Maybe I should try to find them on my 'puter hard drive, might give me a clue.

Backup software

I do not use Mcafee myself but I have had a look at the user manual which you can find online here.

http://download.mcafee.com/products/manuals/en-us/MTP_userguide_2009.pdf

How have you setup your archive options?

You should be looking at the backed up files using Mcafee Local Archive Explorer which will enable you to see what is archived. You can see what is archived and the amount of space being used etc by clicking the local archive tab and then account summary (see page 182 of manual).

If you have set the compress & encrypt options (which is the default) then if you look directly at the drive using windows explorer the backed up filenames will actually consist of sets of numbers that are likely to look something like you describe. Dont forget this product is not only storing your data, it is also storing previous versions as well (depending on how you set it up) so it is going to use up a lot of space.

Hope this helps

Steve

Thanks Steve, I found a reference to some of the files held in these folders on a web forum. apparently they are some kind of financial software...don't know where they came from as they are not on my internal hard drive now. I've deleted them as was recommended on the forum so we'll see what happens. Thanks for your help anyway
