o9 gsa vibration

Guys, you need more miles! 10,000 absolute minimum, 15,000 better. Plus always, always spot on throttle balance. It is very annoying though as it's normally 4500-5500 rpm which is M-way cruising speed where there's nothing to do other than hang on and go numb. Remus dowpipes seemed to help my 07. If the 09 models do run lean it may make matters worse. I've always found hot weather makes the vibes stronger too.

Rattle and Roll

after purchasing my o9 gsa i moaned on this forum about vibration on the bike at app 5,000 rpm 90 mph everybody seemed to think it would get less with miles. 3,000 miles no improvment most of it seems to come through the bars i know the bars on the 08/09 models are different but have been told to try and weight them has anybody done this? i cant find any info anywhere else ,help before i sell it after 5 gss and buy a tiger.:

I to have a 09 GSA and yeS they do vibrate its all part of the fun? I had a 2007 GSA that did it also. If you want real smooth then I also have a 2009 GL1800 Goldwing Boxster 6cyld super smooth!

Don't worry about it it's fine and yes it does seem to get better with miles but I think thats also co's you get used to it. Sometimes I have to bang my hands co's all the feeling gone out of em! Like white finger I used to put it down to playing guitar for over 40years, reving up chain saws, disc cutters, and Riding two strokes when I was younger! But I dont think so it's BMW and Harley are just the same Vibration........

I like mine anyway and vibrate or not I am getting better at riding the high up position GSA with only 29" legs.... Hope you get happier with yours

So with 15,000 miles needed for the vibes and then valve drops at 20,000 or Final Drive needing replacing makes it enjoyable for approx 5000 miles.

Now then, I think you're being a little unfair..... as you forgot the fuel pump controller AND the ring antenna failures at random intervals which are designed to numb your brain into thinking any milage without an issue is enjoyable.

Vibrations

With mine removal of the catalytic converter cured it at a stroke!

Ive got a 2009 gs and dont really notice any problems at any speed, and just done 2000 miles in 9 days!! But hey what do i know ive got an old triumph trophy aswell, and boy they dooooo vibrate :augie

With out offending, What a load of Borrocks ! £13000 for a bike you can't ride at certain speeds!!
They are not supposed to do it and as for it getting better with miles I don't think so... you just get use to it.
Did they tell you before you bought the bike that you suffer vibration between 4000 - 5000 RPM let me guess... no! If the vibes are bad enough that you can't ride at that particular speed the fit for purpose springs to mind. The bike is unusable at that speed or rev range.
Does the manual say anything regarding you will not be able to sustain a ride for a period of time due to the bikes bad vibration. Lets not forget that a power tool that vibrates can cause white finger just how many people could possibly claim for that. The bike is not set up correctly, I suggest that you go back to the dealer and tell them to sort it, regardless of what speed you do you should still be able to ride it without your fingers going numb.

Well said .........a great load of money for the ultimate tourer that does clank clank here vibrate there and lots of other niggles and issues with stuff .............arr" but thats what they do sir " ..........oh right thats ok then , please dont be brain washed into thinking "well thats ok then" go and but a £5 k vstrom, valerado or any other of the REASONABLE priced adventure stlye bikes coz there plenty of them and stick a bmw badge on the tank ......best bike you will ever have and it will carry that "prestigeous" value too now........rant rant rant ...yeah a have had a shite day at work !!

I think the dyno graph in one of the previous post anwers it all. That 'enviro friendly' dip in the power is where the problem lies. The sooner we get lead back in the petrol and tell all the euro greenies to get stuffed the better. I am off out to rid my bike of its cat and fit huge flat slide carbs.

IMHO :augie

Hope not to upset anyone on here,I know how faithfull many of you are to the Make/Model but my 09 GSA had the vibes quite badly too ! Once over 70mph I could watch my knuckles bounce up and down on the bars !
Things got worse after first service but thats a long story which I have placed on this forum previously.Nothing was found when I took it to the dealer from which I purchased it.
Believing that it 'might just be me' I carried on but then got pissed off with myself and decided to get a second opinion.

I now have a new back axle (at 3000 miles ! ) Two new tyres (the front was wearing quite unevenly) and the Injection balance was once again out of balance !!

Since all this I have been with the GSer's to Croatia (bikes done 7260 miles now! ) its due for its next service (book early fellas, you just cant get in ! )

Couldnt believe I had to have a new axle.A gentleman in the service dept said to me,'we have fitted a new back axle to your bike as you are going away soon,we normally rebuild them !! ' WHAT ! Normally ! is this a failing thing with these bikes ? I dont know,I'm no expert but it seems strange, dont you agree ?

Despite all this ,bike seems a lot better now and I still enjoy it.

Sooo,if not satisfied,get a second opinion !!! :rob

Not using continental trail attacks are you?

vibes

I stumbled across a post elsewhere, they reckon on putting lead shot in the handlebars, and this a good fix,i found a gun shop somewhere, and a box of bb shot was about a fiver, worth a try.
some japs have bloody great big bar end weights to cure vibes.

pity they cant make them as smooth as their cars not good for a 10.500 bike.

Do BMW make a 2 cylinder car? I've always assumed that two 600(ish) cc cylinders running on a four stroke cycle (ie a bang every other stroke) is going to have a few wobbles. I'm no engineer though, so perhaps its possible to make a smooth 2 cylinder bike (all mine have been flat 4s till now). The K series is a 4 cylinder. I'd guess that'd be smoother, but even then its hard to get car levels of smoothness without car level weight to absorb the vibes.

I would point out that my bike goes through patches of being vibey and other days its smooth as anything. I've never quite figured out why, but I do occasionally reset the TPS to make me feel like I'm helping. No idea whether it works, but at least I feel I'm having a role.

BTW take my first comments in jest, as I was only pointing out that it'd be difficult to make a bike as smooth (or quiet) as a car. The GS is vibey and has patches in the rev range where its worse, but it shouldn't be too uncomfortable. If you can't ride around it then you should press on to see whether you can get the engine tumed for a smoother ride (just don't expect a Rolls-Royce ride from a Massey Ferguson Engine).

Moine vibes too, I think they all do around 80 in 6th. Just ride slower - 70 is far better or take the twisties :)

Seriously though, has anyone tried super unleaded and seen if that helps?

Vibration !!

Guy,s reading these sort of posts regarding the 1200 really puts me of wanting one, I have a 1997 1100 that will run all day at 85 without any vibration in fact there is no vibration to speak of at any speed.
I have had lots of 4 cylinder bikes so can make accurate comparisins, where are BMW going wrong. By the way bike now on 40 thousand

Yeah, that's the point 40,000miles! :rob It's run in (and it's got that nice lazy top gear that they left off the 1200)

I've had an 1100, 2x 1150 and the 1200, all did over 75,000miles. Of them all the 1200 is the smoothest but you've got to have done around 15,000 miles before the damn things lose the vibes. Mine was a total pain in the ar*e, fingers and toes until it finally saw the light and loosened up, now it's fine. I did put Remus downpipes on early but saw no difference in the amount of vibration, just got more ooomph .

Rode a Demo bike with 4500 miles on it ... based on the vibes on that i wouldn't have bought one ...
Rode an 08 with 15k on it and it was much better ... so I bought it

Got a " they are all like that sir, off the dealer" ...

Mileage? Don't count yer 15k chickens

Same here on my '57 plated GSA, but just to throw a spanner in the works, the vibes came in at 12k - it'd been no problem before.:nenau

Since then the dealer's replaced the front wheel and discs both front and rear - but its still fecking 'orrible above 80 mph. Mileage? Now 15.5k

Going to get the front wheel balancing checked before a long trip to France and Benelux next month. :augie

If your problem has "arrived" then you have a chance of getting rid of it ... "something" has changed ... good luck with it
