OBC illumination problem ...

The digital info display on my 2006 GS doesn't illuminate in the dark - I've had the gauge unit apart and there's no evidence of separate illumination therefore I assume it's normally back-lit on the LCD screen. The other gauges illuminate fine therefore the sensor appears to be working, unless there's a separate sensor for the info display? Anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Never been in there so this is a guess. It will be lit by LED's and the fact that all of them are out would lead me to think that the LED driver has gone. It's little more than a voltage regulator and probably costs a few pence but It will be surface mounted so needs considerable soldering skills and a decent iron to do it. Another option is the power distrabution from the light sensor to the various boards. There might be a break between that and the LCD meaning it never knows to switch the LED's on. Sorry but without taking one apart II cant really be any more specific.

the obvious option is a new one or 2nd hand, price might be horrendous and I believe the unit maybe paired to the bikes ECU as well, may also reset the odo mileage
as its just the lighting and hopefully not too complex to fix a good option therfore maybe a repair, there are various specialists like clusterrepairsuk on-line

Speedometer and rev counter are illuminated by LEDS and working okay The multifunction display doesn't appear to have the same type of illumination. I mailed clusterrepairs a couple of weeks ago but haven't had a reply - probably phone this week.

You are right that the LCD display is normally back lit, maybe you need to strip down the instrument cluster a bit further to find the back light, be it cathode, lamp or led based.

Yes, I had this problem, and, with tears in my eyes, opted for a replacement unit at around £600. I think I have broken even on not buying the extended warranty!

In fact, it didn't fail completely but still made the display difficult to use.

The bike had done about 32k miles at the time.
