OH YEAH, another thing.

I removed the bash plate to get to the oil filter.
But we had taken so long to change the gearbox and final drive oil (noob, remember) that I decided to go on another small trip to heat the oil again.

I lost one of the silent blocks (and bolt) holding the bash plate....
Where will I find this???

Where will you find the one you lost? Dunno :nenau

Where will you find a new replacement? - Any BMW dealer or Motorworks (here in the UK).

You probably had a semi broken rubber mount anyway... They are buggers on older bikes for breaking. You will know by seeing if there is the metal mount still in the sump.

While you phone your friendly parts specialist buy a filter wrench as well. Not too much cash and will last forever as long as you stick with your R11/1150 or K. I don't talk about R12's:D

They mostly pop and fart to a greater or lesser extent. More so with leaky aftermarket exhausts.

If you drop all three oils in quick succession after a ride it saves you the drain/fill time in between.

Sound like it's ready to ride for a fair bit:thumb

drain plug picture

This was the gearbox oil drain plug:

What say you? :nenau

Some of the worst bits in the gearbox oil are those that are not magnetic:augie

On M94 gearboxes it is usually the alloy off the selector forks that find it's way into the taper beaerings that makes it need a rebuild. Unless you are hearing a distinct noise increase when the clutch is out at standstill as opposed to clutch in, you should be OK. You will nearly always find a bit of metallic fur on the drain plug as you cannot always change gear on a boxer smoothly and the only people who never miss a gear are folk who don't ride 'em:augie:D

Easiest way is to look into the gearbox and bevel oil with a torch and a clean oil catcher for noticiable shiny bits. The main thing is not to get paranoid as whatever bike you own you will get paranoid if you look close enough!

Keep riding and enjoy and if anything changes greatly then get on the forum again:thumb
