I've had this a few times now so am wondering what might need looking into. On pressing the starter button I get just a click but no engagement of the starter motor. If I just leave it a second and try again the starter motor kicks in healthily and starts the engine no problem. The battery is a year old Odyssey and I'm pretty sure that's all 100% hunky dory. So I'm thinking the starter motor might need attention - would you agree? Is this a simple thing to cure i.e remove, clean and replace? Bikes an '08 GSA with 35K on it now. Anything particular to watch out for in the process?

Battery, starter terminals clean?
Could also be the starter relay. It's either under the seat or under the tank beside the ecu somewhere. I have never actually found it on my 09 but have been told several times the is one despite my doubts.

I had the same problem on my Harley... New battery as well... Squirted electrical contact cleaner in the gaps around the button..... Sorted...!

I had the same problem too on my 06 GSA

It had a 1 year old Motobatt fitted so I swapped it with another brand new Motobatt I had just fitted to my 955 Daytona. The problem has now gone away and the Daytona starts with no problem :clap

I got an Odyssey 2nd hand that does the job very well but I still hanker after a Ballistic battery. Maybe when the lottery win comes in.

Iv had switches & relay wires in need of tlc on many bikes its not hard to maintain I normally check solenoid as a matter of course if it looks sh*ty finish off with coppaslip grease after cleaning & tightening keeps them good handlebar switch easy to do.

I had the same with an 06 plate, corrosion on the starter relay under the seat, cleaned contacts and been fine ever since.

On my 09GS this symptom was cured with a replacement starter switch - dealer said he had done a few repairs like this!

I think the starter switch is OK as I get a definite click on the button.

I think the battery is fine as it does turn the engine over quickly on the second press and engine fires up as normal.

I think I'll see if I can find the starter relay/solenoid dubbrey....

On my early 2004 bike the starter relay and wiring were under the seat, my newer 2008 bike doesn't have a relay located there but I did notice a relay beneath the fuel tank last time it was removed close to the ABS unit. Perhaps that's the place they moved it to??

Yeah, according to the service manual, on my '08 the starter relay is under the tank in the same box that houses the ZFE. There's a few things to be removed first so i don't think you can physically see it without opening up that control box.

it maybe easier first to get to the back of the starter motor and check for a voltage on the small + wire onto the solenoid (the lump on side of s/motor) when you press the starter, if its there every time then solenoid or s/motor is the problem, if its not then starter button, wiring or starter relay (if you have one) needs further checking

solenoid pulls in a big contact to feed the big battery current to the s/motor, they can stick or get burnt contacts
