Odyssey Batteries - Any Good??

put one on my r1150gs in 2003 and two owners and 11 years later it is still there and working

Odyssey on my RT. Only two years old but still does the biz after the bike was stood six weeks in the depths of winter when this muppet forgot to hook up the trickle charger.

Bought mine in 2008, and it sat on the living room floor 'til I put it on my GS in 2011. Think I put it on the charger first, it was on for about tem mins before charger said 'OK'. Put it on bike and not touched it since. Again, it sat through the weather last winter, and fired up first time after a couple of months.

But I'd consider a Motobat if I ever needed a replacement, they get good reports, (both on here and the FJ site) and I'd rather have a few more pennies remaining in my pocket.

How do you work that out ?

Motobat is cheaper........but better? .......not sure how you get that.

The motobatt is possibly 'better' because it slots straight in with no messing about. as an example - buy an Odyssey from motorworks for £88.50 and then they recommend you also buy terminal mounts for a further £6 - so £94.50 - just so it will connect up as it should.

also possibly 'better' because it has a higher capacity than the odyssey.

odyssey 16Ah
motobatt 22Ah

so cheaper... fits - straight out of the box. and has a higher capacity. does that make it better?

As far as I knew the Motobat is 14ah 200 cca
My odyssey 625 is 18ah 265cca and it cost me £90 delivered
both are outstanding batteries but I opted to pay a little more for the extra capacity and cranking power. I had to trim very slightly but I've no issue of with modding I actually enjoy it.....although the 535 is plug and play ask bendy toy?

Somewhere on this site there is a link to a test that was done by a peep from the states. He tested four batts I think. Motobatt came out on top beating the others. Thats how I figured that one out. ;-)

I have an Odyssey 535 and it slotted straight in without modding - just re-routed the positive cable that's all. Haven't bothered to charge it yet - no need. Had it 18 months and works fine.

Without a link it never happened del :)

Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole again. Put a new one in to my 1200 before a long trip. Completely shot/duff/knackered in Kazakhstan. Resulted in the most expensive replacement I ever bought.

I had the oddysey pc310 for the x moto and after 3 months of non use it wouldn't come back to life so i bought the motorbatt one at 46 quid. i can buy 3 motorbatt ones for the price of the oddysey one so it was a bargain. i haven't had the motorbatt one long enough to see if its any better but it does its job perfectly fine.

That's a strange one - A one-off failure, perhaps?

They are seriously heavy duty batteries, but whether they are better "value" than a Motobatt - is up to the individual. I reckon Motobatts are fine for multi-cyl bikes, but feel the Odyssey has a better characteristic for a big twin cyl engine.

BUT - the Odyssey sometimes creates a problem with PowerCommander 3 modules, in that the cranking voltage can dip below the threshold for the PC3 operating - means that the engine might not fire.

Should you let the voltage drop too low on the AGM battery an optimate 3 and similar chargers will apply a high enough voltage to bring it back, this is not the battery at fault its the charger.
