Odyssey batteries don't like cold weather

The idea of an electrolyte- even a weak one- freezing above 0degC is a nonsense, although MINUS 6.8degC would be right for an electrolyte with SG around 1.1 (i.e. partially discharged) so I suspect the "+" should be a "-". However, I haven't read it up....so perhaps there has been a recent tweak to the Laws of Physics I haven't heard about.

FFS - quote Snoopy (the teacher :rob) .......not everyone else who is equally incredulous at his claim :blast

Al

.

I thought it was worth mentioning, since everybody things Odyssey batteries are god like and all. :rob

.

Not me - I find them vastly overated. They don't have the cranking power or stamina of a genuine BMW battery.

But let people get on with it.

My last two OEM BMW batteries, both from brand new, have never cranked my engine with the same gusto that my Odyssey does

The +6.8c came from the internet I'll google for the link again. I don't see why it could not be true. Salt lowers the freezing point so something may be able to raise it?

As stated, my battery would not have been 100% charged as I use it for short journeys and the servo brakes prob take a lot of the power. All i'm saying is that the battery has been spot on, then in -4c or lower it discharged itself. Back at normal temp it has retained its cranking power fine. Make of it what you will.

And what are they like after 30 seconds of cranking compared to a genuine battery in the same state of charge

But as i said ( after seeing and experiencing more than two examples over the years) i just let folks get on with it.

The trouble is, that a bad experience tarnishes your impression. I bought my wife a new Renalut once... it was the worst car for reliability that I have ever owned... and I'll never buy another.:D

Hence why i've sold three used oddessy batteries this year after the owners had enough and told me to re-fit alternatives and do what i wanted with the oddessies :D

Mistake on website it's -6.8c as everyone thought. This is for a dead battery, but say 75% charged at -4c over 12hrs is still going to give a big cold crank reduction come start in the morning. I'm not sure how much the power would drop but I do know there was not enough left to start the bike.

Like I said if I used an optimate it wouldn't have happened, and indeed when I charged it over the next night which was also freezing it was fine in the morning.

My bike has been buried behind a wall of rockwool for a couple of months, but during the last week the rockwool has been evicted to live outside under plastic, hopefully not to grow. All the time the Odyssey I fitted a couple of years ago has been on trickle charge with a small Cetek charger. But on first start today, with an outside temperature of 3 or 4 degrees the bike really did not want to know, it took three attempts to get started, which is very unusual.

After a short ride the bike got put back into the garage and the charger reconnected, only to show "fully charged" after an hour. I'm a bit suspicious that there is a resistance in the battery circuit somewhere, and I'm going to try and find it this week.

Mines been sat outside since before christmas. No chargers in fact i've barely looked at it. Went to start it yesterday and it fired up forst go. Battery has been on about two years and is never connected to a charger.

I don't understand why people have so many problems with their batteries - I still have the original BMW battery in my 1200GS, it is now very nearly 5 years and 45,000 miles old - it has never been on a charger, never run flat and always started the bike. If it failed tomorrow I would not be disappointed because it has done its job admirably.

What am I doing wrong??

.......What am I doing wrong??

Likely reasons for your predicament:

1. Using the bike regularly.
2. Not using the bike to drive 2 miles to Tesco and back.
3. Not having 10kW of heated vest / gloves / seat / helmet plus autocom / phone / ipod / radio / CD mini system plus spot lights / fog lights / reversing lights / extra brake lights etc.........

From the Odyssey website:

Extreme temperature tolerant

Operating temperatures from -40°C (-40°F) to 45°C (113ºF), for models without a metal jacket and from -40ºC (-40ºF) to 80ºC (176ºF) for models with a metal jacket.

BTW - I was told to update the software on my bike as this is the first thing they would do before even looking at possible shorts. Can anyone comment on this?

My Oddysey has gone flatter than a flat thing.
Following Oddysey's / Nippy's advise I have charged on car charger and then refitted, all seems ok now.

As for charging, 14.5v from tickover even with BTBR fitted Northstar-like spotlights running.

Demon - can you let me know how you fare in the next few days, if you see any degradation in the charge? Ta muchly.

Will do. I am not going to attach to any Optimate etc and check / measure the battery daily. i am riding daily though, so hopefully will stay charged.

BTW, I think wot was giving me the probs on the 1200 was a habit of stopping in 1st, stopping engine by putting down sidestand and leaving headlight on until someone said "yer headlight is still on"..... No trouble since I quit doing that.

My 1150 in Dublin will start after 3 months idle, only just but it will start. Odyssey rules KO.

1200 GS Battery

HI Everyone. I am new to this group and have been reading the threads concerning batteries for the 1200GS. I have always used the BMW charger on my bike from new four years ago. My bike is garage kept and I have never had any starting probs. But this ended on Friday when I tried to start it to go to the BMF rally. Nothing. I tried jumping the bike but all I got was a rapid clicking noise the bike didnt turn over at all.

All I could get from the BMW trickle charger was a red light the battery condition lights were not showing anything at all. I have since put the battery on charge but the bike does absolutely nothing when I try to start it. All i have is a constant flashing of the ignition light even when the ignition keys are removed. I have tried deactivating the alarm but the light still flashes. I thought that if the battery was kaput then a jump would start the bike?

I am hoping that it is the battery but then if it is every site I go to I get conflicting recommendations about the best replacement. Any advice you can give me will be very appreciated. Thanks chaps n chapesses.
Gordyman.
