Hi,

Want an Odyssey battery for my R1200GS here in Riyadh and no supplier to be found. The guys in UAE need a EUR500 min order to place in factory.

Anyone know if I could put one in my checked luggage when flying back here? They are certified for airfreight, would you think it would be allowed?

Ask the airline, or don't get caught.... Would seem to be sensible.

Or just say, "Well some bod on UKGSer said it would be OK, your honour" when facing serious charges of endangering an aeroplane under anti-terror laws....

I know people who have shipped sealed gel-type lead-acids on airlines but carried with them the documentation from the manufacture saying it is approved to be carried by air. If you ask the airline and don't get hold of the right person they may just say no as it's the easy, no liability answer.

I don't know how odysseys are made but if they are not sealed and there is liquid acid that will leak they will not let you carry it, and quite rightly. As many unsealed lead acids are shipped 'dry' this ought not to be a problem and you just pick up some acid to fill it from a garage in Riyadah.

Dangerous goods

Just had a look in our Dangerous goods manual and it looks as if it can't be carried as checked luggage but would have to be shipped as cargo. We do take these batteries (wet and gel) as checked bags but only if accompanied by a wheelchair.

Sorry thats not much help and it may be worth asking the airline when booking.

Regards

Of course you can bring your battery. You can bring virtually anything as long as it's done properly. I shipped a rifle from EU to the US the other year. A gun! BUT: Follow above advice. Ask the airline for the proper procedure.
