My 1100GS has been labouring slightly to turn over when very cold. Its not yet failed to start but I can tell its on the verge, and likely to happen at some point soon especially given its cold up here in Scotland, bike is being ridden less often, and i dont have anywhere to keep it on a trickle charge.

I have an Odyssey PC680 bought for my airhead, but since thats in bits I was going to use the odyssey in the GS. I know it will fit the tray, but have read that AGM batteries like a higher than standard voltage from the alternator. Its a 1995 with (i believe) a 50A bosch unit.

Will this be ok or should I be looking for more info on this 'mod' ive seen mentioned to up the output?

Cheers.

Had an Odyssey on my 1100rs. It's fine (as long as it fits) and avoids the dreaded abs lights winking at you. Just make sure it is fully charged when you fit it. The alternator may struggle to charge it otherwise.

PC680 is the standard issue for the R1150 so I assume it'll be fine in an R1100GS too. Mine didn't last too long - maybe 3 or 4 years. Now running a Motobatt which has been fine for the last 3 years.

Good luck:thumb

cheers SB. yup its fully charged. my only concern was that it would not be able to replenish whats being used, so would slowly decrease to flat even with use. dont really want to have to worry about removing it to recharge every so often.

no harm in trying it for a while anyway. ill measure what voltage is coming out of the alt.

thanks DrAlf, im told the 680 is a good battery. if i get 4 years out of it i wont be too upset ;)

Mine lasted for several years and was still going strong when I flogged it to another forum member.

the battery needs 14.5 to 14.8 to charge it properly your volt at the moment will be about 13.8 witch will only be charging the battery in float mode. you can mod the regulator if you know what your doing just add a diode inline with the negative input on the regulator witch will boots the volts.

cheers MH. do you have a link to this mod? ive not seen anything about it in any detail at all.

Thanks for the links MH, interesting reading. Looks like an involved job which i dont have time for right away, but ive bookmarked the page for future ref.

Cheers
Gordon

The "standard" Bosch alternator on the oilheads will charge an Odyssey PC680 or the similar Motobatt MB51814 no problem without any need to carry out modifications:confused:

I've used both types over many years without any need to charge or hook up to trickle chargers!

Just fit either of the above batteries and use as normal:thumb

each to there own odyssey recommends a higher volt than 13.8 http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/TheShed/PDF/OdysseyOwnersManual.pdf you will be charging the battery in float mode at 13.8 why dont you test your amp hour of your battery time how long it take to get to 10.02v charge it with a correct charger at about 14.7 and test again then work out what you amp hour the battery has

I put the Odyssey 680 in my 1100GS nearly eight years ago and it still starts on the button - even if it's been left for a month.

Thanks guys. I think the general concensus is that it will be fine and just to get on with it, so I will. Cheers ;)
