Serious question:

What are the pro's and cons of the OE exhaust system, verses a Y piece, plus
aftermarket silencer (Remus/Scorpion etc) ?

Apart from the Y piece being lighter, are there real benefits from swapping the standard cat for a Y piece. What is the rear wheel horsepower gain from opening up the exhaust system with Y piece and louder can?
What Im really asking here is: BHP increase per Quid spent.... is it worth it?
Or do people just do this for the extra noise, and to shed a couple of pounds off what is a lardy bike (not a criticism in any way... they are heavy)

Thanks in advance.

Just whipped off my cat and OE can, put a Y piece and a Remus Genesis on it. Sounds nicer, looks better, is lighter, much better pick-up and the midrange is a lot better. I did the wiring mod 5-6 after removing the OE plug.

Negatives: it pops at times and has started at low revs to surge whereas the OE set up did not surge.

I am in two minds whether to leave it on, will give the 'brain' a few more miles to adapt or change the fuel map wires about; the OE stuff weighs a ton, I hope I can sort the surging.

A remus sounds faster but really makes no difference.
Plus the louder noise isn't much fun when you ride long distances, it's very tiring i can do without it.

I run a remus Y piece and standard end can.
Weight isn't much of an issue with all the other crap people add onto their bikes :D

Mine came with y piece and Remus. Not to my taste. After playing about I now have cat and Remus. Wouldn't be bothered with Remus if it had not have come with it. Found bike responded better with the back pressure of the cat ( which is a silencer in its own right). Mine surged a fair bit and pinked on standard set without cat code plug. In the end I found a used techlusion and had
Tts set it up. Now runs lovely and I can use a gear lower around roundabouts etc. others will disagree but unless you are going for decat, can air filter and a remap can't see the point. I
would imagine the remap with the other bits would make some difference but you talking neary a grand if all gotten new for 10 maybe 15 hp. When mine was on the dyno it showed high 70s bhp

Having lugged the cat and the OE can into storage in my garage I have to disagree there is a substantial weight saving to be had getting shot of them! :D

I have to admit I agree 100 % my GSA came with y piece and Remus,
Tried it for a while put the standard can back on, not too load but annoying on a long trip, much Quieter and seems smoother, mine has BB performance chip for what that's worth doesn't seem much different than my standard Gs i used to have, only acceleration in top and that's down to GSA gearbox, myself I'd prefer an overdrive top like standard.

Which is why a few of us have junked the Can years ago and run with a 'Stubby'...:thumb
