Why are they so much cheaper?

Many priced at less than £100?

Are they completely crap at protecting your head :nenau

Or are road helmets just a rip off??

Cheaper because there is no visor system.
Yes many priced at under £100 but many priced at over £200.
a Quality off road helmet will match the safety standards of the best Road Helmet.

Personaly I use a offroad helmet which is of ACU gold standard it's like everything you get what you pay for but against that a lot of the named manufacturers are charging far to much.

i was looking for a new helmet and ended getting a shoei hornet ds just every thing about the helmet was tip top i also looked at cheaper lids but they didnt feel they same , i even tryed the arai tour x but it didnt feel right at all must have a funny size/shape head , try as many as you can and buy the one YOU like the best its not just down to the name

Most don't have closing vents either. Fine in the summer but a bit draughty in the wet and cold at road speeds :eek

have you ever put one on your head? I tried a couple and then decided a VX3 was the say to go...

I know they are all supposed to be to the same standard, but I'm a firm beleiver that you get what you pay for and from experience I've never found that a cheap helmet felt right - it always felt cheap.

There was a weird story a few years ago, when Lazer brought out their new MX helmet, the X-Pro5.

Some bright spark had shoved a load of their X-Pro4 helmet shells away in a warehouse & they didn't find them for a year or so, until the door was opened & someone thought, "oh sh1t...!" They ended up doing a single production run of X-Pro4's, almost 2yrs after they were superceded & punted them out at £55 each, complete with ACU gold approval. I already had an X-Pro4 & was well pleased with it. My local dealer told me that they were getting a large shipment of the new "old" ones, so I got one as a replacement & would deffo get another Lazer, for off-road use. I think I'll always have an Arai for road work...

I have a kbc for serious offroad use and an arai tour supermotard for summer (black with black visor) and a shoei hornet for winter. Shoei is the best quality, then the kbc and the arai comes in last place to be honest. Quality of finish of it is dissapointing. It does look the best though ;)

Ive had some major crashes when i was younger in cheapo helmets and im ok!.... *TWITCH*

The cheaper helmets tend not to absorb so much energy and use the same outer shell for most of the sizes, those of us with bigger heads getting less protection!

They are cheap because they aren't designed to last as long.

A decent road lid will last 5 years or more and still be as good as new.

An MX lid if used as intended will be replaced every season at the longest, if it doesn't get smacked up before hand.
They are almost a disposable item.

Not many of us leisure riders use them that hard/often tho.
