Off road events-beginner

Cheers Greg:thumb

I've ordered the sumpguard. I'll see how I go regarding the risers.

Are the warranties on this kind of bikes actually worth anything? I'd got the impression that the first time you rode offroad your warranty was invalid anyway? I maybe wrong, I'm just going on some of the extended warranty stuff and some comments I'd heard/read in the past.

BMW and NOG have fully backed the warranty on my HP and that has seen it's fair share of off-road time.

All, thanks again for your time in answering my questions :thumb

Thanks ONYERBIKE and Greg for the Husaberg information.

My new 08 Husaberg FE 450 arrives next week :D

Greg, can you advise on where you got your bashplate from please

Now to get the 450 run in and out onto the trails!

Just to wet your appetite a little before the delivery of your new steed, I found this over on ADVrider.:D

Good luck with the new bike, meet up in the future for a rideout :beerjug:

Nice one ONYERBIKE.

Hope to see you all out on the trails soon. Plan is to get the bike run in prior to the Plum Pudding Hertfordshire Trail ride - Saturday 2 January 2010

I just got back from a great days riding Hertforshire's finest with the local TRF.
About 20 of us met up this morning and then given the choice of an relatively relaxed days riding, bearing in mind there's been alot of rain lately or a tougher day riding the fords etc, AKA Greg Masters Scuba Dive Challenge Day!

Very welcolming group of all abilities, nobody get's left behind and help is on hand should you need it.
Alot of respect and consideration was shown to horse riders and walkers etc.
Bloody great day out!!

£40 well spent on annual membership, you can also go on a try out day to see if it is for you before parting with your hard earned.

Not a beard, pipe, slippers, or Hi-Vis vest seen all day. Some bloody good riders though.

ONYERBIKE when is the next ride out with TRF please? I’m keen. I’ve looked on their web site in the past but didn’t see anything like that. I will have a proper look around their site when I get a chance.

A few more queries if you can all have a look please. Excuse the new boy questions.

Adjusting the chain. I take it I need a stand that fits under the bash plate. Are the foot lift stands best? Or are the simple stands easy to get the bike up onto them?

Running in. Bike came with an extra chain and sprockets that I believe you fit once you have run the bike in. Is the extra set an off road set. With the chain and sprockets that are on the bike being road gearing giving you a higher top speed. The gearing on the bike is not designed as purely running in gearing is it? I’ve not heard of this before?

Best man to ask about the Husaberg will be Greg Masters, sure that he can help you with anything you need to know about it.
The stands are down to personal preference, I use one of the foot stand type, once you get used to the lifting technique its simple enough.
The next rideout is on 30th January, not in Hertfordshire but in Norfolk.
I won't be going due to family etc over Xmas.

Get in touch with the TRF leader man for Hertfordshire, he will be able to give you all the information you need,

Ok, finally got sorted with the Herts TRF. Plan to go on their rideout this Saturday 13/02. Rideout is from 09:30 to about 16:30  Think I'm going to be knackered if I can last that long in the cold (forecast = sleet). Anyone got any advice for keeping hands and feet warm on a pogo (no heated grips :tears)? Might see you there ONYERBIKE? Are you going to this one?

Sking gloves for the hands, handguards also to keep the wind of your hands.

For feet, multi-layer socks in your boots but dont make the fit too tight as you need to be able to move your toes to keep circulation going.

I initially had some neoprean gloves that worked well, you're hands got wet, but on the whole you'd stay warm. After a ride out before Christmas with way too many puddles I've swapped for some seal skins. The guys I was riding with rated them highly and they really do the trick! They arent as thick as I'd like on the backs of the hands but good on the whole. Keep dry and keeping warm is a lot easier!

As for the rest of me, I've got some Rukka Baselayer gear I wear, thick socks, body armour, MX jersey, and Enduro Jacket and Trousers. Its just about right for me, you'll get warm enough riding.

Excellent news though, glad you got yourself sorted, let us know how you get on!

I won't be able to make the rideout this month as my work schedule has been changed for February, I am working on Saturday and Sunday but take a couple of days off during mid week. Maybe meet up on the next rides planned for early March, Essex on the Saturday then Hertfordshire on the Sunday.

I also use the sealskinz socks, bloody marvellous they are!
I've worn skiing gloves and my hands were baking, I also tried wearing latex gloves under my mx gloves, keeps your hands pretty warm and are waterproof. (latex gloves, the type you buy in the chemist, mechanics and healthcare workers wear them).
Don't go overdressing as you will soon be too hot, bloody hard work it is :D

Have a good day out, take some pics, meet up soon.:beerjug:

OK. Thanks all for the info. I must order some sealskinz online, couldn’t find anything local in time. I wore plastic bags in my boots, seemed to do the trick and winter road gloves.

Being the new boy I didn’t take my camera as I had enough on my plate. So sorry no photo’s. Had an excellent ride out. TRF leader John showed us some great lanes around the Hatfield to Stevenage area. Actual riding time was about 4 ½ hours. Started with 8 riders, reducing to 4 who did the full day. I think the weather (bit of sleet and snow) would have kept people away. One rider got a flat front tyre and on putting in a new tube it went flat again, so he called the RAC. Hope he got home o.k.

I’m very happy with the Husaberg FE450. Great fun to ride with nice controllable power. Although I’ve been taking it easy with the throttle, now it’s done 12 hours, I can open it up a bit more.

Uncle R, i’ve been following the threads on rally events and would like to try this out. Thinking of getting a trailer soon. Might see you at one of these events, I hope.

I bought my sealskinz from the camping shop at Notcutts Garden centre on the Hatfield road in Smallford between Hatfield and St. Albans, they have a sealskinz stand in there selling the socks, gloves etc.

bigger biking off road in wales

Hi all,

I’d really appreciate it if you experienced off roaders could comment on the following please.

I have 12 odd years road riding (5 years spent club road racing during that time) experience spread over 20 odd years. I’m relatively new to off road riding. Did BMW offroad on a 1200GS level 1/2. Did a KTM 690 super enduro try out day with Desert Rose Adventure riding. Handled both bikes fairly well so about up to level 2ish ability. I’m confident that I could handle a KTM 400 EXC.

I’m looking for a green lane / club event bike. Like the idea of rally events. I’ve not much idea on what events are available, but would like to start with the U.K. Then possibly an event a year in Europe (club level [amateur] only of course) as per events mentioned in this forum. I’m thinking of buying a new KTM 400 EXC.

So questions for you please.

1) KTM 400 EXC. Is this a good bike to last me a number of years for green lane / club event / rally events? Or should I be looking at something else. Would like to ride to green lanes-live in Herts.
2) When does the 2010 UK season start? What’s the first event? How do I find out when and where the events are?
3) Would try to get a new 09 bike as they are about £1000 cheaper than 2010. What should a cash buyer with no trade in expect as a reduction on a new bike?

Thanks
hi i marshal for a club called wetra they organise rallies and enduros in and around the forests of wales . the red kite is at easter time . you can contact them througth wetra web site or enduro news . there is also the cambrian rallie october time both are aimed at the bigger bike and are a great ride. simon

I went on a ride with the Herts TRF yesterday (28th Feb). Agree with everything that Onyerbike and Shadude said about them.

Very welcoming bunch - I told them beforehand that I've got very little experience and it was my first trail ride on my bike. They were very encouraging about the whole thing, seemed happy to wait for me to catch up and help me out when I needed it (which, by luck only, wasn't much).

Some of the trails were 'interesting', given the downpour and field run-off :eek . If not complete mud-wallows, a lot of the trails were like riding through a lake (flat) or up a river (hills)! Was all great fun, I was giggling like an idiot..... :D

We started at 9:30 and I was knackered by about 2:30, so I said cheerio and toddled home. My 450exc is great but the power delivery can make it a bit of a handful for me in the trickier bits, but I've got a couple of ruses to sort that out and I'll get used to it..... :green gri

The only kit issue I had was my winter road gloves which got completely sodden, and hence impossible to put back on if I needed to take them off, something to fix for next time.
