Off road WHEELS

So I am thinking I am bored of swapping tyres every time i want to hit the mud, so am considering buying a spare set of wheels.

Issue is, i am finding it hard to source reasonablyl priced spoked wheels.

i have spoked wheels at present on my adventure and i think they look great.

question is, do i go for cast wheels (can source these reasonablly easily) for road riding, or cant hey be used off road as well?

now the vain bit of me, how do cast wheels look on a 1200GSA?? I know im a sissy etc, etc, but its my only form of transport and i love the thing, really is my pride and joy! so do they look alright? (cant seem to find a picture online)

Ideally I would want tubeless rims, or is this simply the same rims, with a tube shoved in? (always got garage to replace tyres as they do it for free as mate works there - as long as im not buying any of the rubber)

Both cast and spoked wheels on the GS series are tubeless. Cast wheels are not ideal off roading because they are so rigid and have no ability to absorb impact. Heavy off roading on cast wheels could lead to stress fractures or dented rims.

Conversely, on the road cast wheels have less flex in them and if you really tune in to how yer bike feels, you'll notice that cornering is a tad sharper and more responsive.

I have two wheel sets for exactly this reason on my GSA, and the second hand cast wheels (from a GS) have pure road rubber, the spoked have TKC's. Swapping them over takes a genuine ten minutes (you'll need to buy an appropriate tool for the front axle like a 22mm allen key..)

Keep an eye out in the for sale section, from time to time cast wheels come up for sale at around the £400 area, you can then play with powder coating your 'new' cast wheels and bling them up. Have a look in 'show us your GS' .... a few pages back there's a GSA with gloss black cast wheels that looks pretty good ...

i can source cast wheels for £240 for a rear (can only afford 1 this month) and I already have a tool to do the front wheel so thats all good

just dont wanna ruin the looks of the bike as majority is road riding and i think the spoked wheels help give the mean s**t kicker look the bike has from the right angle

I changed my GSA wheels to GS alloys as soon as I bought it. No intention of offroading and hate black wheels especially spokes. Rode much better with alloys.

By the time you've found a second set of wheels and added brake discs and off-road tyres, you could have bought yourself a DR350 or similar and had a proper off-road bike.

I've had my GS since '05 and I green lane it around Derbyshire and have done plenty of off road in Maroc on it. Nothing full on but not just fire tracks either - I've got cast wheels and no probs

I have a set of alloys with tyres and disks from an RT ( I believe ) that I never got round to fitting. Someone here could probably tell you if they'd fit your 1200.

Takes about 20 minutes to swap discs. Only thing you need are a set of GS read wheel bolts as the GSA ones are longer/shorter than GS.

Yes, absolutely. I haven't gone down this route but you're quite right - I must have spent at least £700 on tyres, brake rotors, wheels and a few tools. Another two or three hundred quid and I could have found quite a nice little green laner .....

You can't include the cost of tyres you would have to buy them anyway.

Second bike isnt an option for me due to storage issues, will genuinely be hard enough to find room for 2 wheels let alone a bike bigger than a minimoto!!

Mr_magicfingers, if they do fit what are you asking??

They may be more hassle than there worth. (No offence Mr Magic fingers !! ) The RT will have a 17'' front so you'll have to bugger about with brake calliper brackets .....
