Went to go out on the GSA today and it was dead!

Battery charger was in the din plug on the beak and this has always been fine, but now it shows as a short!

When I did get it charged it wouldn’t fire up at all, it’d turn over but no go go.

I removed the baglux cover off the tank and it fired up????

the only thing I can think is there’s some ropey wiring somewhere around the headstock, but no amount of wire wiggling can replicate it.

I can handle mechanicals….but wiring Is my worst nightmare 😭😭😭😭

Currently it fires up and seems fine even if I turn the bars from full lock to full lock.

Mikeyboy’s your man!

Phil take a step back and DIAGNOSE
DId you hear the fuel pump whine, before you removed the tank bag ? If you were hearing it whine before you removed the baglux its a red herring
Next is the ignition switch wire does yours still have the cable tie on the headstock that makes it a tighter fit??

What was it doing when spinning over? Nice even beat but just not firing a bit of an uneven beat and fluffing frequently ?
With the age of the bike?
I think I would throw a new HES (If its not had one ever) Ignition switch loom and check the ground wires in the loom to the instrument pod They fur up and break and then the circuit that you want to be working grounds out via out another circuit causing grief and mayhem

As to Din Plug look inside it probably has Verdigris shorting the terminals

Disconnect the neg off the battery before you start cleaning/ replacing the socket and just check the wires they run down the left side of the frame to the aux socket on the starter cover and is just a plug in extension loom but the connectors fur up badly

It was turning over but no attempt to fire.

I think the new ignition wiring is a good call, where’s the best source for it?

Fires up fine now, so I think it’s a wiring issue more than the HES, although it might be something to do as preventative for next years travels.

It was really strange, but I can only attribute it to the strap that goes around the headstock pressing a dodgy wire.

The DIN socket short is a weird one too.

Ideally I’d put a whole brand new loom on, but I can’t find anywhere that does a full replacement.

You must be able to order a new loom from a dealer. I had one fitted to my 2001 GS in Germany back in 2008 when it shorted out while at Garmisch for the Motorad rally. Made for an entertaining and expensive trip.

BMW will sell you a loom, but I bet it’s £500-£1000 for one

So what we have here is a transient electrical fault, which appears to have cleared it’s self, a we are now talking about replacing the wiring loom.

:popcorn

Better value ?? Get an AA return to home membership or whatever flavour recovery service suits

I would not get too set into this without further investigation

To me the Fuel pump connector could have been a culprit it had loosened hence my question about did you hear the pump whine

PLUS you would need to know was it the fuel or spark side of the equation that failed ??

Definitely not the fuel pump, but it might have been a fuel connector not fully home as well as a dodgy bit of wiring.

There’s some tlc required on the old girl.

Ideally I’d stick a full new loom on her

Decided the bike needed a new battery, so I’ve treated her to a nice 19ah gel elide battery.

Turns out that it had a 9ah standard Yuasa battery, she starts like a charm now, hopefully that’s problem solved For now.

I really need to give her a proper service and set the throttle bodies too as tick over seems very low until she gets hot, and the fast tickover seems to make it worse, not better 🤔
