Oh dear poor GSA

Think you fella's are missing the point here, i really enjoy fighting the 230kg gsa round off road, it will and can do off road. The thing im concerned about is this final drive bearing after going down to Bahnstomers sat to look at the thing on the bench, i can see why its a piece of rubbish design. I will keep you posted as there is more to this story now that i have seen this final drive out and supposedly repaired. Couple of phone calls to make tomorrow first.
:eek

Sorry, thought you where originally saying you were thinking of another big trailie to replace the BM but they are all chain and you hate chain wear, hence my comments about ceramic chain lube or the dry stuff... can't comment on how good it would be off road, but the ceramic stuff worked wonders on a ZZR1100 and the dry lube aint doing badly on a WR450

As for final drive bearings... BM are only going to replace it with the one they've speced for the bike... been a long time since I've had to do anything like this, but there used to be a bearing shop in Gloucester, if I ever had anything go on a bike or car, I'd just go to them and give them the sizings and get the heaviest duty replacement they had, sod what the manufacturers thought... never had to replace a bearing twice... :)

Update...!

Got a call from the fella`s at Bahnstomer`s. Oh dear again, the final drive bearing was replaced, but they have now found a series of fractures on or near the bolt holes that hold the final drive together. Is it me or is this final drive made of some realy cheap rubbish, i noticed the bearing was made in korea. So much for german engineering

Ah well maybe i will get the bike back soon.

Horses for courses

I have a great deal of admiration for Horse, or anyone else who takes his bike off road. Personally despite my long experience, I am too frightened.
Now, it really is not an off-road bike is it? Not only becoase it is big and heavy but because off road a bike must necessarily be thrashed.' Do you imagine that the bikes used by 'World of BMW' are kept going with the normal service intervals? (And if they write and say they do - it will indicate that so could we.)
You may feel that a 'GS' is supposed to go off road and thus 'ous' is not 'suitable for purpose' - and you are probablt right (you're not one of those asking for a 5 year guarntee as well are you,) but really it is much more fun on a Gasgas or similar!?

The 1200 gsa is now starting to really get on my nerves. When i purchased this bike i had done my home work and asked alot of questions. I wanted a a bike i could tour with, offroad and sunday thrash and commute every day with. Well the gsa seemed to be the answer.
Well the final drive complete unit has been replaced for the second time im really starting to question my choice.
The clutch started slipping just befor the 12,000 mile service which it is in for at the moment. I thought the bike had a wet clutch, ooooh no it has a dry clutch. Wot the hell. I have be told this evening that had dust and signs of water in the clutch housing, correct me if im wrong but didnt i watch loads of gs and gsa`s going fording at the bakerman offroad trips previous years. Did all these riders suffer slipping clutches.
The clutch plate isnt worn but the input seal is damp and showing signs of seppage.
can anyone tell me can water and mud get in the clutch housing easy, or at all.
I dont before anyone puts it ride the clutch even when offroad the back brake is the control for the slow stuff.

Well im going down tomorrow to take a look in the cluch of my bike.

One last thing anyone fitted a ceramic clutch..?:thumb2

Which bit did you go slow on then?? :augie:augie:augie

Seriously, if anything happens to my 1150, i'll be looking at KTM's adventure (if i can't find an seR ) instead of the new beemer.

The KTM's seem to handle to rough stuff very well. I was riding with 2 of them in mid wales last week (strata Florida was one trail we rode). They still look a handful, but a lot more capable than an 1150, and maybe 1200 GS.

They seem very crash proof to.....:blast
