Oh feck, what have I done!!!! I posted my bike on ebay and within ten minutes i got a text from a +48 number telling me they want my bike. How can i make sure im not getting screwed. I have NEVER EVER had any dealings with selling a bike in this way. Im a tad concerned that it may be a scam. How can i stop myself being scammed. He wants to buy for cash and conveniently has a mate in London who is going to come and collect the bike. he chose not to send me an email via ebay but straight to my text number.......
I think I'm being too cautious but what do you think. Be nice please people I've never been in this situation before....


I may not be very trusting but then again im not stupid either

If you're not happy, walk away. It could be genuine, but it could be a scam. You could go through all the hoops and stress the crap out of yourself and it could end up fine. But do you want that stress?

Think through HOW you could be scammed, and do it in a way that negates the risk

He could (for example) ride off on your bike on a 'test ride', but that could happen with anyone, and you'd make sure that you had the full payment in your hand (and cash examined) before allowing that, PLUS you'd ask to see a copy of his insurance so you aren't liable for allowing an uninsured person to ride it. (You can buy a pen that will show up the majority of fake banknotes for a quid or two in any stationery shop)

He could pay you in fake cash....the way around that is (apparently, from previous threads) to do the deal at a bank and pay the cash in directly while the 'buyer' is there.....the bank will test the notes and once accepted and paid in, (you having told them before of your concerns and asking them to check the notes) you will have passed on the responsibility of dodgy notes to the bank.

There's a pretty good chance that it's genuine.....a lot of bikes are being bought by people in Europe and shipped over by the truck load for resale there, as the price differences make it worthwhile

If there's anything that feels too wrong at any stage, just walk away from it, but don't panic and do yourself out of an easy sale through nerves

As discussed elsewhere, they're not deemed by the bank to be genuine until they pass through a complex processing machine, and you can still have th money removed from your account.

The detector pens only work on bleached paper (which most paper is), but when I left the sector sever years ago, approx 10% of counterfeit notes could defeat the detector pens. That's got to be a fair bit higher by now.

I can't see your bike on ebay so unless the auction ended its course or you had a Buy It Now is it still on there?
If it was a BIN did you ask for a deposit to show good intent?

If no money has changed hands at all then you can do as you please, which includes not selling overseas.
You can also ask for a confirmation of intent by email, including their name , address etc.
Of course this doesn't prove sincerity but it may help you feel better.

It's not nice too feel stressed about a vehicle sale let alone overly stressed so ask yourself, do you have to sell to the first person to come along? Why was yours so attractive over others inside 10 minutes? No, I too don't trust anyone 100% and never will!

Incidentally, you were called from Poland if that helps you decide one way or the other.

Me personally, I would say no and hold out for a UK buyer.

Are you desperate to sell? If no then call it off.

The 'buyer' could be 100% straight - do you want/need to find out?

If you still have it on ebay, add a paragraph to your description which says 'No Overseas Buyers, bike released on cleared payment only.'

Puts your position very clearly so it's easy to say no or ignore other similar enquiries.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of.

MCC sold his Hardley ableto to a froggy IIRC, had worries about it and it all turned out fine.....I'm sure that thread will be here somewhere.

St.Eptoe has also mentioned selling bikes to furriners as well....

Being overly paranoid and putting 'No overseas bidders' on a sale seems silly to me

Sound suspicious to me. I got a lot of calls when I advertised my 1150 on MCN & Autotrader. They were all very glib & wanting to pay for bike before even seeing or test riding it.

Where is +48? I sold 2 bikes on here last year very quickly to a chap from Prague. He paid up front , had the bikes collected and we were both happy with the deal.

+48 is Poland not Prague I think... plenty of money upfront, moved in cash to another account job done....before the bike leaves your possession....

Bike sales abroad

Last September I put my VStrom on ebay (had a BIN price) and it went so quick I didn't get to read the ad. Buyer said people from Glasgow would come and pick it up and would not give his details - initially. Well eventually it came down to:-

He's a dealer in Poland, the Glasgow bit is the Transport company he uses (also a Pole) to pick-up the bikes and brings the cash at the time (he'll want a hand to load up though). I said bikes because when I found it was OK I offered and he bought my F650GS (twin-spark) at the same time.
