Ok, time to stop pretending that the air shock is fine... I am tired of having to pump it up.
Which replacement would you recommend? I use the bike mostly on 50% road and 50% trails in the Pyrenees, Morocco, etc. Thanks.

Hyper...............can you guess

Pro!

And if you carry luggage, hydraulic preload adjuster

Thinking of doing this as well

Fed up with trying to manage the right psi Only to dump too much air when disconnecting airline / pump and it sagging

I had Ohlins fitted to mine and found it excellent. A couple of people I know have had issues with the Hyperpro

I bought my Ohlins from ABW of the shelve. It has been very good....the air shock I have not missed for one second.

Thanks. A bit more research over the holidays re Ohlins vs hyper pro. Other recommendations for the front forks?

I have a wilbers coming, should be here next week. will let you know how it goes, was thinking of an ohlins as I service them but the ohlins shock for this bike is a different length from standard as far as I can see.

IRRC one of the guys on this forum couldn't get his Wilbers to fit- something to do with the reservoir fouling on the exhaust, and generally being a really tight fit. so it will be interesting to see how you get on :)

With the ohlins you could always fit a set of WP forks from one of KTM's exc bikes, these have an extra 30mm travel over the standard XC forks, and would be a much better improvement for the front end, and also restore the geometry back to the bike.

I have a Wilbers 642 on mine. Reservoir will be very close to the exhaust (and a bit of the plastic rubber/paint stuff is worn as a result).

Whilst mine is sprung for me (and lowered by 7mm), it has/is taking some time to set it up right for the varying conditions I want it for.

Things I have found

- recommend you set the pre-load before final fitting for what you expect to be using it for on your planned trip as you can't really do this on the bike (only a problem when carrying camping gear one day, then solo the next, then camping gear etc etc)
- to stop bottoming out, particularly with bike loaded with gear on, ended up winding the high speed compression adjuster in quite a bit. It was about the only thing I could do on the trail
- whilst they have 5 year warranty, a condition is that they are serviced every 2 years. This cost me £158 (which included shortening the rod). In hindsight, I'd have ridden it until it needed attention or broke.

The difficulty in setting up the preloaded is why my shock went back to hyperpro to have their hydraulic pre-load adjuster fitted. Made life so much easier for getting the best out of the shock.

Hello, fellow xchallengers. Do you think the rear conventional shock with added reservoir and not an emulsion shock is a must for the BMW Xchallenge? I mean if you are not planning going over tree logs or extreme-hardcore enduro stuff (single trails etc) do you think it is necessary to get the version with the extra reservoir?

hi all, I think the forks should be fixable without major work ,looking at the pictures of the internals they look like the internals off the conventional marzoc 45mm. the main problem with adding more suspension travel with these bikes is they already start off with a monster seat hight. I went for the fully adjustable wilbers with hydraulic preload as I could see a problem with setting the shock on the bike as there is no access to the rings. I also went for the adjustable length so I could fiddle with ride angles. I have read about the clearance problems on the exhaust so will take a blow lamp to exhaust and create some clearance as the exhaust wont be affected by the slight mod compared to the exhaust outlet diameter. will let you know how I get on.

Hi I'm looking to by a new shock and would be interested to know the problems people you know have had with the hyper pro .
Would you like to give me some details ?
Thanks kito

I done quite a bit of research and the hypro seemed the best option I've heard of problems with ohlins leaking, I fitted a hypro on mine but haven't finished the build yet, so can't comment on the feel of it, all I know it's gotta be better than the air shock that was on it .

I thought you had one on the bike you used in the Dales with Dazza a few years ago?
Didn't you take it to S. America?

Yes that's right I did. I know what to expect in terms of performance with the hyper pro shock. It worked very well with good performance but it literally fell to pieces I think I ridden it quite hard but I still thing the was a lot to say about the reliability I personally experienced and was trying to see what other peoples experience is as I'm about to build up another XC and trying to decide what shock to go with

I'd be interested in what, or how yours failed.
